Title: new computer

Have just bought a new computer and want to make sure its fully protected before going on the internet. I've read several threads about the free stuff available such as AVG and Spyware Vanisher but am unsure about what exactly they protect against. Do I need a separate firewall as well?

Yes you need a firewall as well - you can either use the free version of Zone Alarm  (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=GB&lang=en) or if you have XP on your new computer, just activate the Windows firewall (you'll find it by clicking on Control Panel then clicking on Security Centre).
