I'd start with a fairly cheap nylon slip lead, one that doesn't need too much fiddling around with eg the Resco Cordo-Hyde Show Lead from HUB

Leather show leads are quite popular with Cocker exhibitors but as a good one is quite pricey, I'd wait until you were sure showing is for you before investing in one ;)

The shorter the better (less lead to fumble with--you'll want to tuck it up in your hand when gaiting) and the narrower (finer) the better, but you may have to experiment with that if he pulls a lot

the shorter one is the narrower one by the looks of it but it seems awfully narrow to me

That's strange - we've bought loads of those type slip leads over the years and haven't had any problems apart from the fact that they do wear out eventually, but having said that we still have several that are at least 10 years old and still being used on a weekly basis. I tend to buy them at a show so I can test the slider works ok (plus you get a better selection of colours at shows). Maybe you were just unlucky

Hi Elmo,

I got a slightly thicker show lead for Lily as she is still a baby and tends to set off like a train!  I'm hoping when she gets more used to moving I can transfer her over to a thinner one to show her on  .

I helped a friend out one day and handled a very hyper  boy  ::) and the lead snapped and fell apart in the ring ::)  will not mention where the lead was from  ph34r

We buy our leads from http://www.showleads.co.uk/

Can you practice walking up and down in your garden with Elmo on the show lead? We always do this with pups before going to ringcraft just so they get used to the different feel of a show lead. When you practice, it can help to hold a small tit bit in your right hand so that puppy will focus on the titbit and not worry too much about the funny lead (well it works sometimes :005:)
