Teething and mouthing
« on: November 01, 2008, 06:19:18 PM »
Our lovely male cocker has just turned 1 year and is turning decidedly teenagerish! However, he's still chewing on wooden furniture and other things. How long dos this chewing thing normally last? When do our four legged freidsn stop teething?

Also his mouthing isn't great....any tips to help him control this behaviour?

Thanks all.

It would be useful to know what you are currently doing to try and control these behaviours.
Honey has never really chewed wooden furniture, as we never gave her the opportunity too, however she does like to chew holes in our sofabed (and unstuff it), and will destroy rugs.  I have tried anti-chew sprays, but she seems to like them...  ::)
When does he chew? If it is when he is left alone, could he be anxious?? or is it boredom? With Honey it doesn't seem to be these things, so hopefully she will grow out of it in time...

When you say mouthing, is it him gently touching you with his mouth?  Or is this "Puppy Biting" that hasn't yet been controlled?? If it is gentle, you can control it by teaching a leave command - this way you can invite him to mouth if it is appropriate to do so, but you can tell him to leave and he will.  If he hasn't actually mastered bite inhibition, you really need to go back to basics - a trainer may help with this, as I have no experience of this in an older pup/dog.  Again, though, knowing what you are doing now might help others give some advice.  ;)
