Chicken and Rice. How much to feed
« on: August 09, 2019, 03:08:36 PM »
Darwin who’s now 10,5yr, has had a dental and a couple of extractions this morning   So I’ve not collected him yet, but Ive been told he’ll be on chicken and rice for a couple of days.  Its over 10yrs since I’ve last had to feed him chicken and rice.  So how much make a portion ?  Do you go by their normal kiddie weight ? Is a 50/50 mix best ?

I think ratio is 2:1...rice/chicken. But we feed raw so I would try to keep ours on that unless medical reason why not.

I don’t actually know why chicken and rice used as a convalescence food. My head says why feed rice as a dog would not eat that naturally.

Our oldest spaniel has an upset tummy every time he has rice so we tend to give just chicken or scrambled egg. I wouldn’t worry too much quantity wise just for a couple of days as he probably won’t want to eat too much to start with and by the time he is feeling better he will be back on his normal food anyway. I would feed small portions ( half a cooked chicken breast or an egg or half chicken and rice) three or four times a day and build up from there.
Hope he is back to his normal self soon.

Well if I was you....having gone through this with Ollie (11) early this year, today I would just poach/steam white fish like haddock/cod/hake with a small amount rice, it is softer than chicken for first day then maybe tomorrow or Monday go with the chicken breast.

I went in Iceland and got frozen fish as no bones but need to flake just to make sure.

My vet actually said white fish or chicken to me.
Cocker kisses and cuddles just make my day!

I would agree with Jaysmum, chicken does not  suit either of mine and is more inclined to upset their tums. I prefer to give them either boiled white fish or turkey.

If you find chicken a problem, you could try a turkey breast instead?

Hope he is back to his old self soon

Thank you.

He was so so sad on Friday evening, crying or more bleating like a little lamb.  He was much happier yesterday, his tail started wagging again and if even took a soft toy out into the garden. He’s loving the chicken and rice.  OH is giving him just a few grains of rice when he would had normally had a buscuit.

Check up at the Vets tomorrow afternoon

Hi Alison,

Sorry I missed this, I hope Darwin is doing ok ?

Turkey mince with Rice, or potato if he likes it is a good alternative to Rice, Sweet potato is good for the tummy if the GA has upset him.

Hopefully he is over the worst of it by now, scrambled egg is nice and soft if he is still sore.

3 to 4 small meals a day and I would go from a couple of spoonfulls to a handful of the food and build from there, his poo should give you an indication if it's too much as it will be sloppy ( why do we always talk about poo when you have a dog !)
Love to you both x

This what I  texted OH after we got home from the vets this afternoon
“What do you get when a vet sticks a thermometer up a spaniels bottom”.

Apart from the incident with the thermometer, the initial check up went well. But they have recommended soft food for another week.  I think later in the week, I will start to mix in very well soaked / soft kibble back into his diet

I will often give mine either chappie wet food or white fish and mashed potato

It’s taken virtually 3 weeks for Darwin to fully recover from his dental op.  The change of diet to bland food, as much as he loved it, totally disagreed with him ( and us).  Darwin has never been a gassey dog, but OMG his gas range was in excess of 25 feet!
