Starting to chase the family cat
« on: September 12, 2011, 09:24:36 PM »
I have another post about my rescue cocker with separation anxiety and been given lots of support and advice, now wonder how to deal with this problem.

The past couple of days, the dog has started to chase our 13yr old cat. She was with cats in her last home and came here not bothered by the cat. The cat has now settled to the dog, but now without any reason she flew out of her crate and chased her.

I told her off and sent her to bed, don't know why she has started to chase her but what can I do to stop her and deal with it when she does?

It is really difficult to stop this, as I know!!! Once your dog has had the "fun " of chasing the cat it is really hard to teach them to restrain the chase instinct and leave the cat.You can try teaching "leave it" in other situations and then use this command. Make sure your cat always has an escape route until the problem is under control and the cat has a safe place in the house to go.We have a stair gate which the cat can jump over but not the dog.So far our cat and dog basically lead seperate lives. I know there are people on this site who have had a lot more success and I do hope you are one of those. I hope we improve but at the moment my aim is to keep both animals safe and happy! good luck!

Thank you, they have been separate since the dog has been here.

The dog wasn't taking any notice of the cat and it has taken all this time to get the cat to feel safe and come downstairs as she just lived up there. When she finally does and walks round the dog and the dog wasn't taking any notice she started to feel part of the family again. Suddenly it seems the dog is getting jealous and wants to chase her. I do ssy 'NO' and she stops, just couldn't understand why the urge was suddenly there to start to chase.

It is difficult, we have two cats who are 19 & 16 yrs, they hate the dogs but the dogs love the cats and want to play and chase them but obviously the cats will have none of it, they hiss and scratch the dogs if they get too close.

We have a stair gate between the living room and the dining room,  the cats get to sleep in the dining room out the way of the dogs.  Should the cats jump over the gate the dogs get excited but with a firm "NO! on your bed", they do stay their distance until we can escort the cat out.

It is a pain, but with my two cats being old and the dogs being young they just don't mix.

Is it possible that she is guarding her crate, or even you, from the cat?

Was going to say she sounds like she's guarding the crate. Does she chase the cat when the crate is out of the equation?
