Title: Very Sad News
Post by: daftcockers on March 22, 2004, 10:58:56 PM
Have been working up to writing this and having just cried on a few shoulders here goes. On Friday we had to have our Alfie our first cocker put to sleep he was only 4 years old. The vet  after being told what had happened the night before and seeing our baby was 99% sure he had had a brain heamorage, and advised us it would be best for him to go peacefully. This was the hardest thing we have ever had to do.

I aplogise to every I met on Sunday for not telling you, but I just couldnt talk about it and found it easier to put on a brave face.

I do believe that Alfie was looking over Paris  when she was in the ring and was placed. (well I like to think that).

Thankyou to everyone who has let me cry on their shoulder Joan, Nikki Poos and Topaz Billy.

I'm so sorry to hear your news Susan - it must be heartbreaking to lose Alfie at such a young age  Sometimes life can be so cruel :( I still don't find it easy to talk about Katie who we lost last year so can well imagine what you're going through now. It does get better in time & one day you'll be able to remember the happy times without feeling so sad.

Thinking of you all

That's so sad. Am really sorry to hear this news. I can really understand about not wanting to tell everyone sometimes about this sort of thing as it can be so upsetting. Just think though he's running free at the bridge.

So sorry to hear your sad news but as Gilly has said what a very brave decision you made and what care you have shown by letting Alfie go with dignity.

Take care

Susan, I have to admit to shedding a tear or two myself when reading your post.
I have great empathy with you, I too had to make that terrible decision four years ago with my Lakeland Terrier. He had suffered with Colitis for over twelve months and there came a time when his quality of life was starting to be affected.
The decision was a tough one for I loved Corky dearly, I wanted him to live forever, but I also new I could not allow myself to let Corky live in pain.
We had such memorable times together, but time does heal and now we have Buster who is just adorable.
Whatever you do, please do not beat yourself up over the tough decision you had to make. I did and it took me much longer than it should have done before I felt ready to offer a new dog a loving home.
My thought are with you.
MIke.

I don't really know what to say Susan   It must be heartbreaking to lose them at a young age but I like the idea that he was looking over you and Paris - just hold on to that thought and hopefully it will help get you through this very sad time.  I'll be thinking of you all today

I'm so sorry to hear this, perhaps this poem will help.  Hold onto your memories of him, no-one can take them away

When Dogs go to heaven, They don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best...

He Gives them fields. Fields and fields and fields.

When a dog first arrives in Heaven, he just runs.

Dog Heaven has clear, wide lakes, filled with geese who honk and flap and tease. The dogs love this. They run beside the water and bark and bark and God watches them from behind a tree and smiles..

There are children of course. Angel Children.

God knows that dogs love children more than anything else in the world, so He fills Dog Heaven with plenty of them. T here are children on Bikes and children on Sleds. There are children throwing red rubber balls and children pulling kites through the clouds. The dogs are there, and the children love them dearly.

And. oh, the dog biscuits. Biscuits and biscuits as far as the eye can see.

God has a sense of humor, so he makes His biscuits in funny shapes for His dogs. There are kitty-cat biscuits and squirrel biscuits. Ice Cream biscuits and ham-sandwich bisquits.

Every angel who passes by has a biscuit for a dog. And of course, all God's dogs sit when angels say "Sit". Every dog becomes a good dog in Heaven.

God turns clouds inside out to make fluffy beds for the dogs in Dog Heaven, and when they are tired from running and barking and eating ham-sandwich biscuits, the dogs each find a cloud for sleeping. They turn around and around in the cloud... until it feels just right, and then they curl up.. and they sleep. God watches over each one of them and there are no bad dreams.

Dogs in Dog Heaven have almost alwsy belonged to somebody on Earth and. of course the dogs remember this. Heaven is full of memories. So sometimes an angel will walk a dog back to Earth for a little visit and quietly, invisibly, the dog will sniff about his old backyard, will investigate the cat next door, will follow the child to school, will sit on the front portch and wait for the mail. When he is satisfied that all is well, the dog will return to Heaven with the angel. It is where dogs belong, near God who made them.

The dogs in Dog Heaven who had no real homes on Earth are given one in Heaven. The homes have yards and porches and there are couches to lie on and table to sit under while angels eat their dinners. Ther are special bowls with the dog's names on them. And esch dog is petted and reminded how good he is, all day long.

Dogs in Dog Heaven may stay as long as they like and this can mean forever. They will be there when old friends show up. They will be there at the door..

Angel Dogs..

Thankyou sooo much for all your kind words they have helped me and John by reading them and the poem had me in floods of tears, but when they had dried I did feel that the words would apply to Alfie, he was such a  sweet loveable daft idiot of a dog. I think it is going to be tough on Archie and Sonny as they seem very subdued, Paris doesnt seem too bad.

I know deep down we did the right thing and in time I'm  sure we will forgive ourselves for having to make that choice.

Once again thankyou for all your messages.
