How far did you travel to get your cocker
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:22:22 PM »
We are currently searching for the right puppy for us and I think I probably am quite cautious and want to get this right but I just wondered how far people traveled to get the right pup for them.I would quite happily go pretty far for the right puppy but my OH tends to think that we should stick locally.

We were a 4 hour rouns trip to get Sam.
Dogs are natural optimists and believe if they stare hard enough and long enough, the icing on the cake could be theirs.

Luckily both of mine were about 1hrs drive away. But we looked at litters 2-3hrs from us and would go as far as needed for the right pup.

For the 2 I've had from breeders it was about an hour-ish drive to each but I drove from Edinburgh to Retford in Nottinghamshire to get my rescue girl Tilly which is a 500 mile round trip. Luckily she was worth it :005: :luv:

Chloe's breeder lives  240 miles away from me. When I first went to see the litter, I drove there and back in a day but when I went to collect her, I stayed in a nearby travel lodge, so that I could pick her up first thing in the morning. The journey home took 6 hours, it was a complete nightmare on the roads, but Chloe was brilliant. She cried for 2 miles then slept the whole way back home, apart from one brief pee stop.

My first cocker was 20mins away,

2nd one about 4hrs round trip.

then when I wanted to mate her it was 8hr round trip, but worth it as I got my top boy HarveyNorman.

If you get the right dog what matters with the time it takes to get them, do your homework, ask plenty question, check all health checks are done.

For both of ours, we travelled from Cumbria to South Wales - a round trip of over 600 miles each time.  Admittedly, they were both to rescues rather than to see pups but they were worth every mile and the hotel bill too.  Your dog will be with you for 13-14 years if you are lucky.  Over that timescale, what is one weekend spent on the road to get the right dog for you?

10 miles here too!  Though I was so determined to get a puppy from this specific breeder that I’d happily have driven to the other end of the country if I'd needed to

Milo's breeder was just over an hour away, and when we collected Mocha as a rescue it was a 3 hour round trip.  Would have travelled further for the right dog though.   ;)

Over 200 miles round trip, made the journey several times visiting whilst she was a pup.  Couldn't get one locally.

TBH distance wouldn't matter to me for the right pup.

When we got our first cocker Tilly, it was about 5 hrs there and another 5 hrs back (West Sussex - Poole, Dorset)

When we got Lady, it was about an hr to Yagoona RSPCA and another hr to get home again!!
