Oh Dear! What a rightious lot! I had been hoping for a teeny weeny bit of help however i appear
to have been hung drawn and quartered! How apt for Easter. Goodwill to you all.

I looke up righteously in the Dictionary - Neil might be right, as one of the meanings is:

Righteous: Morally Justifiable

Personally, I think all the responses to his appeal for a stud dog were "morally justifiable"  ;)

What kind of help did you expect Neil? Did you read any previous discussions here before you posted? If so, did you honestly expect any other response, when it is obvious that COL'ers support responsible, reputable breeding?

I could ask you to reconsider, but sadly, I don't think its going to happen and yet another litter of irresponsibly bred puppies will be brought into the world :( I remember a reply I gave to a previous post'er on the same subject:
:'( I will hug my boy a bit tighter tonight while thinking about your little girl  :'(

Look really sorry but nobody has the right to assume i;m irresponsible. I;d
actually keep all the pups myself rather than them not have good homes.
I already have 3 rescue goats and 2 abandoned cats. I have owned 2 rescue
dogs before Hattie. I hand rear orphaned lambs for the local farmer. I;m not

You are right. But unfortunately in a forum situation such as this, we don't know you and only have the written word to go on.

This is a heated subject at present (as you may have been reading) and I think people are feeling a bit dismayed about the amount of irresponsible breeding happening at the moment. There are contantly Cockers on our rescue pages here and it does sometimes feel like a depressing never ending circle.

The posts on here may seem harshly written but I'm sure all have the best intentions behind them.

I have 2 young cocker dogs, and love them very much, they are my pets - why don't you just keep Hattie as a pet and have her spayed, she sounds as if she is really enjoying her life atm.

I know you wanted to keep one of he pups, it would be far easier to research a good breeder and get Hattie a little playmate or even take on another rescue.

I couldn't agree more, it certainly is a heated subject at present, that many of us feel very strongly about, and it certainly seems recently that more and more people want to breed from their pets. I'm happy to leave it to the proffesionals. Things can go wrong for them at times even with all their years of experience, they can't stop puppys being born too early, bitches being forced to have c sections and becoming ill afterwards.

Can I give you an example of something, when your bitch has these pups, supposing the pups are born early, and they are poorly and need handing feeding and watching 24/7, do you have the time or the inclination to do that? Do you feel you have sufficeient knowledge to deal with such a situation?

I'm not scare mongering, it is a reality, these things can and do happen.

All I know is I wouldn't be putting my bitch through it without understnading the subject inside out. And I'm sorry to say this but I'm not sure you do. You are being understandably defensive because you think we are getting at you but we certainly are not we are trying to offer advice that will help.

Everyone says before they have thier first litter that they'd keep them all, believe me by the time they reach a MINIMUM of 8 weeks you'll want them to be settling into their new homes as they could become troublesome and difficult to train individually.
None of us know you, we can only go by what you write  ;). As with all things in life, if your going to do something do it properly, then if you have a litter you can be proud that you've done everything you could to breed a litter that is much better quality than the average litter you see advertised in papers.

No-one has assumed you're irresponsible - we're just trying to make sure you fully understand everything that goes into being a responsible breeder and are prepared to do the necessary homework and research. No-one is born knowing this information but you need to be willing to learn from those that do have the experience and know what they're talking about. As you've owned rescue animals yourself, you're in a better situation than most to appreciate how often dogs & other pets find themselves in need of new homes and how many never do get the homes they deserve. I'm afraid it's not a realistic option to say you would keep all the puppies yourself if necessary - puppies kept together as a pack into adulthood would become a complete nightmare and would be impossible to train and socialise properly. Supposing you were lucky enough to find good homes for all your puppies, are you prepared to take on the responsiblilty for rehoming those dogs if they ever need it so they never turn up unwanted in a rescue centre? Even the most experienced breeders will have dogs returned to them at some stage for one reason or another and you have to be willing to do this even if it's not convenient (we once took a dog we bred back the day before we moved house!) Sadly too many breeders think their responsibility ends when they take the money and hand the puppy over to someone else :'(

I don't think it is what was said as much as how it was said.  There is a very similar thread going on at the moment about the a similar issue, maybe some people need to check themselves a little before they let rip.  The alternative is that nobody asks for advice on things incase they get shot down in flames.  I appreciate that lots of people here are passionate about their dogs and the breed, but instead of getting on your high horse you should maybe try and change peoples opinions in a more constructive manner.   ph34r

Feel free to do so Anita  ;) I don't think anyone let's rip on here, I'm a member of another forum and they are much tougher than we are on here. Next time I write a post I'll need to remember to sugar coat it a bit more  ::)
In fact alot of times I don't actually say what I'm really thinking so as NOT to offend anyone  ;)

Couldn't agree more - have often spent ages re-typing things because I've thought my original wording was a bit 'in your face'  ;)

I think most of the advice on this thread has been very constructive and nobody at all has "let rip" as Anita puts it. This is a discussion forum so yes you will get different views and some people have a blunter style of writing than others but I can't see that anyone has got on their high horse here. Neil has been given plenty of information about how to set about learning how to breed responsibly if that's what he wants to do. Anyone who posts on a public discussion forum has to accept that not all the replies will be to their liking - that's the nature of an internet forum and compared to other forums I visit, this one is pretty tame! Glad to hear I'm not alone in constantly re-typing or deleting posts in case they might offend someone somewhere - it doesn't matter how hard we try, it seems we'll always offend someone ;)
