No you don't get white Cockers cropping up in litters as you do in other breeds. Many years ago, a well-known English Setter breeder made a concerted effort to breed totally white Cockers using pale oranges/pale lemons & there are some photos in very old Cocker publications. Eventually, this breeder abandoned her efforts as she wanted white Cockers with black noses & found this was virtually impossible to achieve. Geneticists have commented that she would have succeeded if she had accepted brown noses. I will try & find a photo later & scan it in if you're interested :)

Yes please Jane, its quite interesting all this :)

Would the cockers (white) have had health issues? I have heard that some total white dogs can be deaf, and have skin problems?

Mind you thinking about it, its just as well, there are no white cockers, can you imagine, trying to keep them clean :o

Why do you think I got the nearest colour to brown?

I'd be interested to see the pics too.

Here is the photo - sorry the quality isn't good but this is a very old black & white pic (from 1951) so you have to make allowances ;) These 2 pups were both registered as whites although from what I can tell, they were not pure whites as there seems to be some flecking visible. I don't know whether there were health problems with this breeding experiment - haven't come across any info about that aspect anyway.

They look a bit like small English Setter's.

Thanks for the picture Jane  :)

Albinoism is a bit different - that's a total lack of pigment & is not something any breeder would deliberately set out to breed (though I think this has happened in Dobermanns :(). You'll need to submit the photo to a website (eg any of the online photo storage websites like Photobucket) & then link to the photo using the "IMG" button.
