Title: Bertie needs some COL TLC
Post by: MIN on August 21, 2014, 07:17:52 PM
My work pal's cocker spangle Bertie has a suspected bowel tumour. He is 9 years old and was a rescue.  He has been unwell for sometime, good days and bad days. the vet first suspected he had eaten something nasty but now has come to the tumour conclusion. the vet is reluctant to do any invasive surgery so he is only assuming but has suggested PTS. my pal today at work has been in tears ( we both have) as Bertie is still happy, eating and waggy tailed most of the time. all afternoon we has discussed the unmentionable. while he is like this she is reluctant to do the deed. he is now allowed what ever food he wants ( sausages) but wonders if there is anything she can do to ease his end of days.

please spare a thought for Bertie and for 2 kiddees who do not understand why they can not rough and tumble with their bestest mate

It's a bit of a leap of diagnosis based on some observed symptoms  :dunno: have they x-rayed Bertie?  I ask as Pearls latest vet trip could easily have been the symptoms of a tumour in the bowel but there were no masses evident on the X-ray.

Hope Bertie has many more norty cocker days x

i asked about if he had xrayed but she said the vet ruled it out because it would not show up anything. the vet is a well liked and very popular ( i do not use him although he is near to where I live) and has treated Bertie since the beginning.
Bertie's main symptoms are bleeding from his bottom as well as when he poops and I believe he is swollen in the area. I am not sure if the vet has felt a growth or not.
I shall see her tomorrow, might be able to get more info ( the boss is not in work)

For me, I would like more tests first. Having lost my own Bertie to cancer I understand her pain. Please pass on my good wishes and understanding. It is such a tough time. X

Min this is horrible for your friend and her family, I have never heard of a vet suggesting this when a dog still has a quality of life, if he was of his food, and in discomfort or not standing etc then yes but it is a heck on a thing to suggest.

I assume he can feel a mass and his tummy is distended. As for the passing of blood, maybe he is preparing her for the worst!  Does Bertie get distressed and pant when he poops, if this is the case and distressing and he is in pain, I think I would ask a lot of questions before I make a decision

But regardless of that I send caring thoughts to your friend and her Bertie, and that every day he is with her he is special and loved and may there be many good days

I agree.Would have expected an x ray or scan.Hope Bertie can have many more days with his family. It must be awful to have to explain to children about a sick pet.Sending best wishes.

Please send all our very best wishes and support. We lost our last boy to cancer at nine and this resonates with me. In those last weeks we just did whatever he wanted at the pace he chose and were guided by him. It was really tough and I'm crying as I write remembering. For us it was about quality of life and dignity at the end. I hope that your friend and her family and you can find your way through this difficult time.

Sending lots of love and best wishes for Bertie and his family  :luv: :luv:

Awful situation. I think I'd have to get a second opinion before any decisions. I also would take each day at a time and as long as Bertie is tail wagging, eating and walking then I would let him enjoy his remaining days doing whatever he wants. I certainly wouldn't pts until he showed signs of being uncomfortable xxx

I know it's possibly too late but turmeric (curcumin) could be worth a go -

It's not scientifically proven but anectdotally people have found it's helped with tumours.

So sorry your friend is going through this pain,  :'(  I feel for her and family,
but my self I would explore every avenue before I let Bertie go.
and I would get another opinion first and if the outcome is not good and
if he is still bright and not in pain then go day by day.
sending lots of healing thoughts to Bertie and his family

took all your well wishes into my friend today, made her cry, I have often spoke to her about " our family".
we had a natter about Bertie and she says she really needs to know one way or the other. After a family discussion ( including her parents who are his day carers)) they have decided to get a second opinion from another vet who is prepared to x ray or even ultra sound ( that's how my stafiefs tumour was found). Fingers crossed.

had my own crisis today, Gemma ate a ant gel bait box  :o  a panic phone call to my vet and a description of chemicals from the packet, then a wait while the vet phoned the animal  poison people before ringing me back. was saved a 2 hr round trip to the vet thank goodness, just told to observe her. Apparently the active ingredient is one used in flea treatments and only harmful in a great quantity.  Gemma is fine, spent the afternoon eating tomatoes and humping my leg  Everything normal, except I have a few more grey hairs and have had a megga bol****** from OH

What a good friend you are. I think, after today's "excitement" with Gemma, you need a nice relaxing evening with wine and chocolate. Big hugs to you all.  Diana x

I'm so glad your friend has decided on a second opinion, I would certainly want one just so that I would know what we are dealing with.

Sending positive thoughts and :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to your friend, family and of corse Bertie.

So glad your friend is going to seek another opinion. If she had taken her vet's word I would imagine she would always ask 'but what if?'.

Also glad Gemma is not poorly after her mishap! Goodness me, what a couple of emotional days for you. Would send you extra chocolate supplies if I could but you'll have to settle for these I'm afraid  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

It's all happening with you! So glad Gemma is okay, what a scare.  If it helps, I would suggest an ultra sound, that is how both Lara and Bertie's tumours were discovered.  Thinking of your friend, I am glad they are going for a second opinion, it doesn't make it any easier. However, I think they need to know for sure. Xx

So very sorry to read this - was speaking to a Lab owner who's dog had anal gland cancer removed last year, they were at hydrotherapy and the dog looks brilliant - was so hopeful Bertie would be ok.

What an awful birthday for your friend.

Run free Bertie - no longer in pain or suffering x

It must be awful not to be given the chance for a proper goodbye. With all my rainbow babies I have had lots of time to spend with them and  say goodbye before they left me.
There has been a lot of tears at work today from Emma and myself. She only came in because she did not want people thinking that she was skiving as it was her birthday. I would have stayed away regardless

why dont you try some probiotic yohurt, my dog had a bit of diarrhoea and some of his poo was a bit on the pink side sometimes, i have kefir which you grow yourself in milk, it feeds on the lactose in the milk and you get a whole load of beneficial bacteria for the stomach.  research on the internet tHE in seaRCH BAR DOG ON KEFIR, THERE IS A STORY OF A DOG WHO THE VET COULDNT HELP AND AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS TAKING KEFIR HIS POOS WENT TO NORMAL.  MY DOGS POO IS OKAY KNOW.YOU CAN BY KEFIR ON THE INTERNET

RIP Bertie. Tears in my eyes right now even though I didn't know of Bertie until a few minutes ago but my heart goes out to his family. It brought back memories of my lovely Hollie whom I lost in April. My new cocker Nina is a love but the loss is still like a dull ache. Bertie's family can take consolation in the fact they loved him dearly and he knew it. xx
