Wet edges of ear leathers
« on: December 13, 2014, 03:35:14 PM »
I wonder if anyone would be able to offer any advice on treatment of the tips of cocker ear leathers?

We've just had Saffy groomed with the hair on her ears cut up neat round the leathers.  The groomer mentioned that with the ears being frequently wet in this weather that the very ends of the leathers were going black in places right at the edges. It's difficult keeping the ears dry, but she suggested batheing them in diluted hibiscrub. There's no smell or anything from the ends of the leathers nor from the insides of the ears themselves.  I wonder if anyone is able to offer any advice about what to do? Thanks

Yes, diluted Hibiscrub works a treat.

We make up a 10% solution about 2 inches deep in a plastic jug and, with the cocker either sitting or standing, lift it up under each ear until the bottom of the ear is in the solution.

If you use a large enough jug you'll be able to get one hand in to gently massage the ear while in the solution. No need to rinse it off afterwards, simply dry the ears.

The same dilution is ideal for keeping scratches, scrapes and small wounds clean as well and we find it useful for dipping paws into after they get muddy.

Hibiscrub can be obtained from most chemists or online from Amazon where it's about £6 for 500ml.

Bob.
