Title: Standing your dog!
Post by: JaspersMum on November 05, 2008, 12:56:48 PM
Heidi is giving Meg a hard time when she stands her for the judge, she'll hold a lovely outline for a few minutes but then backs up and onto haunches.  Any suggestions or is it just a case of keep practising.  We are trying her in different positions in line up in case it's not liking dog behind/in front which sometimes helps a little.

You might guess that she's fine till the judge walks past her and you can see how frustrated Meg is with her which isn't good from a Junior Handling perspective  ::)

Take a small pile of books, lay a mat (car mats usually work, or piece of wood) across the top on a hard surface stack the dog with the front paws on the books, so head higher than bottom facing 'uphill' and reinforce the stand command.
I don't know how or why it works and it always seemed to me that the bottom should be raised not the front but it does work this way around! It stops the dogs going backwards, or sitting, and you are not straining any part of the dogs anatomy to do it. works wonders for 'sitters' too.
