6 Weeks Pet Plan Insurance
« on: October 04, 2005, 08:15:18 PM »
When we got Bailey from his breeder, we got 6 weeks free Pet Plan Insurance.

Tonight I have had a phone call from Identapet (I think).  She had all of Bailey's details and said that he was registered with them when we had his 6 weeks free insurance.  She mentioned a disc, that I vaguely remember with a 25 digit number.  They specialise in identifying your lost dog if it goes missing, by this unique number.

Anyway, she went on about Bailey, what colour he was, does he have any health issues, is he on any medication (apparently if he needs emergency treatment, they pay up to £500 to vets).  She then said that my 2 years free was up, and would I like to continue with this service. £29.00 per year of £69.00 life cover.  She then asked me for my credit card details.  Im very wary about giving these over the phone, she could have been anybody, so I asked if she could send something out first, like a renewal form.  She said that the system couldnt do this, so I just said I would call her back next week.

I've looked for a website, but it just has a story about a dog, nothing about Identapet.  Ive had a look on Pet Plans website, and that has no mention of it either.

I know a lot of breeders sell their pups with 6 weeks free insurance.  Has anybody else heard from these guys or know anything about them?

Thanks  :)

It sounds a bit dodgy to me - surely their disc would be no better than Bailey's name tag, with your personal details on ? The disc could be removed too - microchipping would be much better, not to mention cheaper. I'd tell them to sling their hook, Elisa.

Elisa,

I got something through the post about this. I didn't read it in detail, but my understanding was that it was linked to Millie's microchip, not insurance. I just thought it was a bit of a con....they were going on about putting Millie's details on a computer to help track her down if she was lost. It sounded no different to the service you'd get if a microchipped pet was scanned....so I chucked the info in the bin. It was defo from the same company you're talking about.

Well, Ive just dusted off all my forms, receipts, insurance quotes etc and found original Pet Plan policy.  It turns out it is a company called Pet Safe (Doh!!!   ) "The Ultimate Pet Tracking Service!".

They must have got all my details from Pet Plan 2 1/2 years ago (Ive been with M&S) ever since his 6 weeks free insurance ran out).

You get a little disc to put on their collar with a number to ring if he is found and his own personal reg no.  All for £29 per year!!  :o   She said to me it would save me having a tag with my name and addy on it - better for security - however I thought this was a legal requirement!

Bailey is chipped, and has a name tag on so I really don't think he needs anything else. I just got panicky when they wanted his details and then they wanted my bank details!  <_<

Thanks guys.  :D

I wouldn't bother if he's chipped - TBH it's much more likely to woork if god forbid he got lost. There are a few companies doing this now, but it all depends on the size of their database, and identichip is probably the most commonly used (microchip people).

The PetSafe database is fine if someone finds your dog who hasn't got a microchip scanner, but then again, they are simply duplicating what WOULD be on your dog's own tag that they are supposed by law to wear with address, contact number etc. (if it still had its collar on), its microchip details, and, by the sound of it, your pet insurance, so when I was asked if I wanted to continue after my 'First Year Free' (when I had forgotten to put the tag on his collar anyway!' I just didn't bother ....

I have free petsafe for Billy with his petplan insurance.

To be honest i find it very useful.

Billy has a normal dog tag on his collar with name address ,home telephone number and usual details which he is required to wear by law.  He also has the pet safe tag which asks people who find Billy to contact a telephone number and quote a reference number which is engraved on this tag. Petsafe have a whole load of telephone numbers stored there for us ie my mobile number, my direct line at work , my dad etc etc so they will ALWAYS be able to get hold of one of us should someone find Billy. Obviously there is no way you could store these numbers on his dog tag , plus petsafe  are open 365 days a year 24 hours a day  ;) .

The thing i find useful is that they also allow you to temporarily  change the details they hold for you,  for example when we went on holiday i rang them up and gave them my dads telephone numbers as Billy was staying with him for two weeks. Without this, if Billy went missing whilst staying with my dad the people who found him would be ringing my home telephone number but would get no response and may perhaps have given up trying to locate his owner and may just thrown him out. :(

Like I said I get this free with petplan but if it wasn't free I would still buy it  :)

Yes he is chipped but not everyone has a chip reader  ;) .
