Bella won first prize!
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:14:03 PM »
At Wicken Dog Show!!

OK, it's not exactly Crufts, and Wicken is only a small village in Northamptonshire, but there were 25 or so puppies in the Best Puppy Class and she won! And the judge asked if we showed her and when the OH said no, he said he was surprised.

I don't think she is 'breed standard' because she has a few 'lurking working' genes according to her five generation pedigree, but she certainly has the temperment, she is such a show off!

And she has a lovely red rosette which she wants to eat but we have stuck on the kitchen noticeboard. She's exhausted now from having said 'hello' to so many new friends.

 :D WELL DONE BELLA :D

Hope she will get some lovely treats when she wakes up.

As for the "lurking working" genes (love the term - well done!) it depends how far back, I think. I am sure I have read that breeders often inject new genes this way in order to get good show standards in later generations. Sorry, clumsily written, but I hope you know what I mean.

Of course, if the judge isn't particularly up on CS standards then you can't rely too much on what was said. But if you were keen to show her then I am sure you could find out if she really does have potential!

Well,we only surmise that she has 'lurking working' genes because right back at the beginning of her pedigree, there is an FH CH, but through her dad's line there are lots of Show Champions.

Does anyone know how much size matters (I know i'm asking for lots of rude comments here!!) because she is very much a pocket cocker.

And I think that the judge (who was KC registered) had a soft spot for spaniels, because in other classes, the springers and cockers did well. A docked cocker even won waggiest tail in the novelty classes!!

Mind you, it did have the waggiest stump I've ever seen!

Awww Well Done!  Does it really matter if there are working genes a few generations ago?  I'm not a breeder or a shower (being the owner of w-cocker Ben) but if her pedigree is OK and she is making the grade ...... why not go further!  I also think the judge has excellent perception - cockers are great dogs!

Fred is very proud of his sister Bella - well done

I wouldn't mind showing Fred (just in local shows - nothing too serious), but I am not sure if we can anymore as his "bits" are now missing in action!!!
