ringcraft classes
« on: July 11, 2006, 08:17:11 PM »
My sister is keen to go to ringcraft classes, she is a bit shy and doesnt want to go alone. She has a deerhound she would like to show. my question is ..would I be allowed to go with her with my working cocker.?. Not to expect to show her obviously but just as company and support for my sister..also I would quite like to learn ringcraft. I may never show my dogs but I could help show hers if I knew what I was doing..

Yes it will be o.k for you to go along, dogs do not have to be k.c registered to attend ring craft :D
We have just got back from ringcraft with our pups, it's a nice night out and the dogs get to socialise which is great.
Hope you both have a good time.

We've had a working Cocker at our ringcraft classes - she just came for socialising with her owner who shows a Vizla. Our classes are very relaxed too - tonight we had about 10 puppies of all different breeds playing together outside after they'd done their training :D Never been asked about KC registration at a class before either so I don't think it's very common.

My old ringcraft class promotes itself as ringcraft & socialisation so are quite relaxed in that respect. That was the one I took Vegas to (for the socialisation part and for me to practice handling as he isn't KC registered) and before I'd even found a seat got told that his colour wouldn't win in the ring :005: Wouldn't have minded so much but it was a papillon breeder that told me that >:( I've moved to a new one now where there are a few well known cocker people and they were very helpful when I had Disney there many moons ago - oh, and some dogs just went along for socialisation too so I reckon you should be fine ;) Maybe just ring them to double check first though ;)

the thing is the nearest one is in Invergordon , miles away.  we dont actually know who runs it. thoght we might check with the Invergordon vets maybe theyd know, A dog trainer who also was a police dog trainer, used to take them here plus obedience but shes moved to skye , she was great, not at all bothered about
k.c. stuff just good manners in dogs and owners. and as you say she socialiasation of both parties. puppy classes were great. I loved it all so did my dog. And It was great meeting all the other dog owners and seeing all the breeds. they ranged from farm collies to standard poodles. all the dogs got on well and we used to meet up for walks when the classes ended. great crack.

I forgot to ask Is there an age limit? Maggie the deerhound is two. she is from show stock and is KC reg.
the dog I would take would be Liath a 7 yr old blue roan KC working cocker with FTCH parents so" no show" if you get me, just for company for my sister and a learning experience for me. liath loves attention and is very socialised. its just so I have a dog too at the class.

Some classes allow newcomers to go along and watch and then decide whether they want to join.  Maybe you could go to the class (without dogs) and make some enquiries about membership, training, etc.  You might also be able to get a feel for whether the club is more interested in dogs that are going to be shown to a high level, or wants to encourage new people, regardless of whether their current dog has heaps of potential or not. Then you could decide whether you both want to take the dogs the following week?

Ive had an Idea . I know a lady who shows Irish wolfhounds and she is dog mad, and very very nice. so I am going to ask her if she would be interested in running a ringcraft class here. nothing ventured nothing gained.  she will be able to give my sister top tips as well as she is well used to hounds. :luv:
