3 Counties - Advice Please
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:47:50 PM »
I haven't shown before but I'm thinking of entering Izzy in the puppy class at 3 Counties.   (Just got half way through the on-line form and then chickened out) For a first timer (puppy & owner) is this show likely to be too much for us - in other words should I aim smaller?  If so can anyone suggest something more appropriate, I live in the Midlands.

Hi Cockahoot,

Yes, I think you were right to be concerned that perhaps Three Counties Chanmp show
might be a bit much for a first timer - both dog and human!

I started showing by going to local "companion" dog shows which are advertised in the
weekly dog press ("Dog World" and "Our Dogs" newspapers). They're a lot of fun and
you can really gain some valuable experience and confidence at those shows before
progressing onto the more formal Kennel Club open shows.
You need to remember that your puppy will need to gain in experience and confidence
as well, so it would be a good idea to join a local Ringcraft club - there is a list you can
obtain from the Kennel Club of clubs in your area. Just give them a call.

Companion shows are also advertised on the Kennel Club website and on
www.dogpages.co.uk - just click on Coming Events. If you search on Google you'll also
find other websites with companion dog shows in your area.
I'm running one near Northampton on Sunday 9th September - you'd be more than
welcome to come along to that!

Seriously, I'd give yourself some time to pick up the ropes at these shows before you
try out the championship shows, but meantime you would also learn a lot by going
along to watch - so do go along to Three Counties on Gundog day and sit at the ringside.
You'll no doubt meet some of us COL'ers there, you'll have an enjoyable day out, you'll
certainly learn a lot and you'll probably also part with some cash at the many doggie stalls!

Good luck and hopefully see you at Malvern!
Heather & Geoffrey.

Many thanks for the advice, I will have a look for some companion shows.  Izzy has been going to ring craft classes and to be honest it's me who lets her down because I feel very self conscious,  everyone else there already show.  I've been to loads of shows to watch so do have a general idea of what to do but obviously putting it into practice is something different, so the sooner I start with her the better.

If you e-mail the kennel club they should be able to give you a list of ringcraft classes in your area

I am already taking her to ringcraft classes.

I've had a look on the website this afternoon and have found some companion shows to take her to.

Many thanks.

The Moreton show is a good day out for everybody - not specific cocker classes to enter but good to get some practice in the ring

Hi cockahoot,
No need to feel self-conscious.
Remember that the people round the ring are looking at your dog, not at you!

All the best with your showing.

Like Heather said...people are looking at your dog  ;)

It does get easier with practise   Once you have the hang of companion shows maybe try some smaller general open shows to gain experience both for you and for Izzy?  You could maybe ask at your ringcraft class which are the smaller shows in your area?

Enjoy showing off Izzy  :D
