Insurance for charley
« on: May 09, 2008, 11:15:59 AM »
Im struggling with this insurance for Charley - with everything thats going on health wise, and them not having a diagnosis, what should i say to them? The receptionist at the vets seems to think il have trouble getting an insurance company to take him on? He almost ate a massive bee this morning that was sat on the grass, if i hadnt of shooed him away quickly, he would have been stung.  This dog needs insurance that is for sure, and the cover needs to start today preferably before our next walk  ::)  Anyone with any advice?  :D

I would single out a few policies that you like the look of and then phone them and explain the situation. They may cover you for everything but his current unnamed condition - tis definitely worth a try  ;)

Well the tescos one doesnt cover for lifelong illness, just 12 months, so that one goes - shame really i would have got my clubcard points for that.   :005: Im just looking at sainsburys now (nectar points too) - phoned the vets and they said they would fax any info on charleys medical history (11 weeks old and has a medical history ::)) to the insurance company if they needed it. Right here goes with the phonecall - im useless at explaining myself, tend to go all the way around the houses  :005:

Try Healthy Pets too - I think it is cheaper than Sainsburys and they cover lifelong illnesses. If I could change from M&S Healthy Pets would be my choice from a cost and cover point of view.

You can e mail Healthy Pets - they come back to you very quickly.  & it is better that you both put things in writing  ;)  Would point out though that no insurer will cover pre existing conditions and I am pretty certain that there will be a 14 day exclusion for ANY type of illness/condition when you incept the policy.

So your walk may have to wait  :005:

You are unlikely to find a policy that starts straight away for illness; and some have an introductory period for ALL claims, injury as well as illness.

In view of his issues, I would recommend a more specialist company like PetPlan; you might pay more for the policy, but imo, they are more likely to offer you comprehensive cover; some of the cheaper companies will include blanket exclusions (for any ear treatment, for instance), whereas PetPlan seem to be more specific with the the exclusions they specify  :-\

My partner has just taken Charley to the vet for him to look at his ear - we dont want to leave him with all that down there all weekend.  Kinda hoping he'l give us an idea whether this trouble with his funny turns is down to the ear trouble? Hes going to mention the insurance to him also. Hopefully he should be covered later. (If we manage to do it online anyway) I will let you all know his progress.  :D

I'd call these people in person.  Ben is with healthy pets and I have nothing but good things to say about them  ;)  They are very approachable when I've called them and have never quibbled about the settlement - Ben isn't 3 yet and I've claimed far more than I've paid  ::)

They also cover for life so Ben's last bout of sickness and diawatsit was covered in full ........... no excess to pay  ;)

Do your homework though as I took out the policy with no history for Ben - one of my cats had a history of cystitus so they won't cover anything to do with that in the future  ;)
