Bailey's coat
« on: July 23, 2004, 09:10:47 AM »
Bailey is nearly 12 weeks old, and is black apart from some on his chest and abit on his paw and under his chin. His mum was a solid black and dad was a blue roan.

Anyway my question is that I have noticed he is getting quite a few little flecks of white coming along his back... Is this normal?...... will it come out with hand stripping?  :?

His coat is getting really curly around his legs and his breeder says his coat is quite profuse in comparison to the pictures of the other puppies of hers that she has seen

Any advice??

While his dad is roan he can have some spots, that is normal. You can't strip them out, they are coming back.

Our orange roan have had as a puppy only orange ears and spots on his nose. The back was all white. But when he grew older he got roan on his back en legs.
Greetings,

If you mix solid & parti breeding, you can get white hairs appearing in the coat (as well as the odd white spot in the places where Bailey has them). It depends on how big the flecks are whether they can be stripped out or not - if its just a smattering of white hairs, these would be fairly easy to strip but they would come back.

Some puppies do have more profuse coats than others & will require more grooming. When Bailey is about 4 months old, try & find a groomer (or perhaps your breeder will help) to tidy up his feet, ears etc (without shaving the legs as many high street groomer tend to do)

Thanks for your tips, unfortunately Bailey's breeder is a long way from me, and I don't seem to be able to find a groomer on recommendation in my area, as I certainly don't want him clipped :?

That's a shame Correna. I know Cocker groomers in Gloucester & Stroud but no specialists in Bristol that I know of. You could try having a go yourself - there are lots of tips on this board to get you started :)

I am prepared to travel and gloucester is only about 30miles away. If the groomer comes recommended it is worth travelling.

If you have contact numbers I would be very grateful
