This may help some of us who are in the depths of the doggy insurance minefield and I know there have been sooooooo many threads! (I must have read them all!) But I was wondering last night what is the most you lovely people have had to claim within a 12 month period (or try to claim, as the case may be! >:() and which insurance company are you with?

I know there will be a huge amount of differing curcumstances but it may help me/us decide...!

I like many have it drummed into me that Petplan are "the best" but also the most expensive. I think for most of us its Petplan v the cheaper quotes which may not be "the best!"

I've just submitted the claim to Petplan for Henry  :'(, and it will be about £4000.  I will report back later if they pay up, but so far they have been very good on the phone.  The only complaint I have so far is that the sales department were still phoning me up to extend my cover note, after I'd told the claims department that he had died.  :'(

If they do pay up in full, I think I will probably stick with them for ever more.  The cats have always been with Petplan too, but the biggest claims for them have only been a few hundred.  On one memorable occasion, Fergus ran up a £600 bill, and it turned out there was nothing wrong with him other than he'd been bitten on the bum by our local mean cat.  ::)

Jo - aren't you too excited today to be asking insurance questions??  :005:

I have claimed £4000 this year from Petplan-MRI scan-£1500-Spinal op. the rest.No problem getting it back.He has needed hydrotherapy too which I could have claimed for if we hadnt reached the max for this year.Have been with them for 12yrs and havnt had any problems and have had several claims(tho never as big as this year!) Jennifer (just make sure you have' life' cover-my mother was caught out with that with another company which only covered a condition for a year-her dog had a hereditary knee problem and she had to cough up a few thousand to get the second knee done at a later date) I guess you are getting a new dog today so ENJOY!!

I am in the process of making a claim with Healthy Pets - i put 2 claim forms  (one from the specialist and the other my regular vet)  in on

Aug 17th only to discover the other day that my own vet didn't send off the form until the 27th. Will let you know how i get on.

BTW, Good luck with the new pup, Jo

I've claimed £2,164 from NFU this year for everything relating to William's back problem diagnosis. The biggest bill was for the orthopaedic vet consultation and MRI scan, but they've also paid for over £300 physiotherapy plus some bills from my normal vet for the initial consultations and anti-inflammatories.

Last year they paid for William's dental, which many insurers won't. They also paid for the vet fees when William swallowed a peach stone and ended up having an x-ray. But they refused to pay when William was castrated because of having an undescended testicle, whereas some insurers will.

I've had William insured with NFU since he was a puppy and Louis is now insured with them. The annual cost for the 2 of them is £362, which includes a discount for having 2 dogs insured and a loyalty discount for renewing William's insurance.

£550 so far with Kennel Club Insurance, does not seem much compared to other claims here buts its money I don't have hanging around and if the conditions had not cleared up could have been much more, it gives me peace of mind that no matter how many blood test etc they need once I have paid my £50 excess I don't need to worry about further costs and my dogs can have any treatment as required. They pay promptly too or my vet can charge them direct. For me insurance is so worth every penny.

In nearly 9 years of owning my own dogs..... and three dogs in that time, I've NEVER made a claim.  ::)

In fairness, I didn't have my first dog insured most of the time, but he only cost us about £600 in vets bills in his whole life (outside routine stuff which you can't claim for anyway) but that £600 was cheaper than having him insured as we wouldn't have been able to claim all of it anyway. I've had Dave 2.5 years and Normy 2 years (although she's now 4.5yrs old) and I haven't had to claim for either of them, they're both fit as fiddles and issue free. Normy had one claim before I got her as she managed to slice her thigh open on a wire fence but it was uncomplicated, so not too big a bill.

I claimed £500 from Tesco about 2 years ago when Gari was hospitalised overnight with a mystery condition, the cheque arrived quite quickly, if I remember right. And I have just claimed for his last illness, but the cheque has gone straight to the vet. :'(

It may be worth finding a vet who allows direct claims, as it can be difficult sometimes to find the money at the time if the bill is high. :-\

This year for Jessie we have claimed over £5000  ph34r. She has had 2 MRI scans, a fortnightly blood screen and lots and lots of medication...her renewal from M&S has just come throught and its £348 for next year.....I have just paid it......I would never be without insurance for any of my pets.....Out of the 5 animals I have owned 4 of them have run up vets bills over £4000 in a year...

The cover I have pays out £7k a year per condition as long as I stay insured with them....

Mylo my first cat (a chinchilla persion) was the only one who never really claimed for...he never got ill till he got old...!!

Hodge out next cat was diagnose with Giardia then contracted FIP and spent 3 weeks in the RVC at Cambridge before he died.....

SaffiWestie has allergy issues which are ongoing

JessieKaKa has recently been diagnosed with cancer (multple myeloma).

Bailey our current Birman had to have an MRI scan and spinal surgery which ran a huge bill up....but thankfully he has been well since recovering.

Just under £4K in two weeks with MoreThan - paid out very quickly.  At the time they had 15% excess, so also ended up paying about £500 myself.

Alfie and Rodaidh ran up bills of just under £4000 between them in the space of 3 months last year - Alfie had a tumour on his leg which needed removing and treatment and he had a rough time with the anesthetic and ended up pretty ill and then Rodaidh had all his luxating patella carry on which was multiple x-rays, surgery, more x-rays and aftercare. Tilly's shoulder diagnosis in June/July cost about £1400 all in and between Tilly and Rodaidh I've claimed back another few hundred over the summer because of her ear infections and pyoderma and his wet ezcema flare ups which have all needed multiple vet visits.

I guess 3000 before Wilf was even 6 months old

Have just claimed over 3000 for my cat as well recently while Roobs claimed nearly 2 grand for her eyes - both in the same period really

All of them are with petplan and they paid up quickly without a quibble

Purdey's insured with M&S who pay out promptly & she is covered for up to £7000 per condition, per year. I have made numerous claims this year for over £3,500 with no problems. The only negative side is that they're premiums have increased quite a bit since she was a pup (& I could get cover cheaper elsewhere ) but as she has ongoing conditions (allergy probs) if I were to change insurers, these conditions wouldn't be covered, so I'm stuck with M&S for good really ....but this (I believe  :shades: ) would apply to any insurance company.........good luck with your search  :shades: ;)
