What is a pre - existing condition?
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:02:20 PM »
Pupster Gemma is 11 weeks old, when she went to the vet at 10 weeks old for 1st jab the vet looked in her ears, said they were 'dirty' and 'possibly had mites' , she cleaned the ears and intends to re examine her ears at 12 weeks - if they are still 'dirty' she will be prescribed ear drops.
I took out the 4 weeks free Petplan at the time, but I since had a look online and have found a cheaper comparable policy to what Pet Plan offer. Will her ear mites (if that's what they are) be classed as a pre existing condition?
Will I have to stay with Pet Plan to have her fully covered, or can the mites be cleared with drops - and then she can be insured as not having pre existing condition with another company?

When I got Freya she had mites. I was told once theyve been treated for them once its incredibly rare for them to get them again, they usually get them from mum. So I wouldnt bother mentioning it on any insurance quotes x

You'd really need to check with the new insurance company. Thing is even if you don't mention it when you get the quote the insurance company will check with your vet for any treatment the dog has had, otherwise everyone could just register their dogs as having no pre-existing conditions and get away with it.

It's been noted on her vet records, and if she does have drops that will obviously be recorded too - I was wondering if I could have problems in the future making any 'ear related' claims if the insurance company were to ask for her records

There could be, it really depends on the company and their policy... Tilly has had ongoing yeasty ear infections since I've had her and when I changed her insurance a couple of years ago they obviously checked with the vet and her new policy excluded 'canker' which is nicely non-specific and when I checked it basically covers most kinds of ear illness (not injury) ::)

Sasha had a similar thing at 11 weeks, she was prescribed drops.

The insurance I took out won't cover her ears. She is five this month and has never had a problem with her ears since.

For something like that, if they do list it as a pre-existing condition then they may lift it after 12 months if there has been no re-occurrence. Not all companies will do this but M&S did with Dallas when he was younger. On his records was a bottle of hibiscrub and the label said something along the lines of ' clean lipfolds as and when required'. There was no infection present so it wasn't a treatment as such but they still listed lip-fold related conditions as a temporary exclusion.  I took out a policy for Vegas at the same time so had to list his leg injury as there were x-rays and specialist fees involved - I was expecting to see something silly like all joint & joint related conditions  excluded but there was none listed on his  ::)
Dallas ( 10) & Disney ( 9 )
