Dog Yawning
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:00:32 PM »
I had read somewhere to watch out for a dog yawn as this can be a sign of anxiety so I have always kept an eye out for this if my dog is faced with a situation I think could worry him.

However I've now read somewhere else that this is a signal to calm a dog and to yawn at your dog for reassurance!

Does anyone have a view either way

Both hold true.

Yawning is a calming signal - so if you yawn you are signalling that there is nothing to worry about.  I have used this to great effect in a range of situations, from grooming to passing fear aggressive dogs....
If your dog is yawning, it can be an attempt to calm itself down - which wouldn't be necessary if there wasn't some stress to begin with!  ;) However it's more likely to be evident AFTER a stressful event... rather like we humans start breathing again after the danger has passed...
