Dog Insurance
« on: May 13, 2011, 10:49:45 AM »
Hi all

I am currently looking to insure my 2 working cockers, but am having problems as one had a slipped knee 1 1/2 years ago and had to have pins in his leg, and can not find a company that will insure for any patella problems or arthritis on any leg, obviously I am not expecting for the injured knee to be insured, but would like to know that if anything was to happen on the other legs that it would be covered, can anyone recommend any companies that would possibly insure for this??

Thanks in advance

I have always had my dogs/horses insured..(Dogs with More than and the horses with the M.F.U..Horses are a must do so no way out on that score...But if i could go back in time i would start to but money away in a separate account for the dogs....

As two the one with the slipped knee..I would give Tesco insurance a ring as just see if they would cover your dog..Other wise but money away every week in a separate account in case you can not get you dog insured...

One of my dogs broke her toe and the following year my insurance refused to cover her for arthritis anywhere on her body.

I'm afraid it is a minefield.  Hope you find an insurance company that will meet your needs.

Can't agree more. My insurances kept going up each year and when I really needed it the insurance didn't cover the problem. That was an £800 bill.

Putting money away is a great idea but it's like giving up smoking. You should be better of. Hmm!

Finally, I remember my friend who is a true expert on all things cockers tell me insure your pup for it's first year as that's the time most things go wrong, accidents, health etc and then cancel and put the money away.

Thanks everyone, we have decided to take your advise and put some money aside each month rather than taking up insurance that probably wont even cover them if something were to happen!!

I'm not sure we could have put enough money away for some of the things that have happenned to our dogs. My daughters 4 years old spayed lab had a mammary tumour removed 4 weeks ago and it's visiably reacurred already. She's booked into a animal hospital tomorrow with an oncologist and soft tissue specialist (they had to take so much tissue the first time they removed the tumour the op will be difficult).

She's potentially looking at a full mammary strip, removal of lymph nodes and ? follow up treatment, we wont actually know until tomorrow. The vet said it's 'bad luck' to happen to such a young 'spayed' bitch, but bad luck happens to dogs sometimes and we'd be lost without the insurance.

When I had my retrievers one had a mammary tumor, because she was 10, I decided to have her PTS;   :'('(she had had a good life until then, but was always having phantom pregnancy's followed by mastitis's. >:D afterwards the vet said " I'm so glad you did that, I couldn't tell you to do it but all the glands & teats are inter connected & we would remove one & it would start up in the next one".
I'm not advising you to do this, just letting you know what was said.
