Vets may be refunding me .....
« on: October 22, 2011, 12:33:30 AM »
Alot of you know the story of diesels first two nightmare moths with me - for those who don't here is a quick summary :

I took diesel to vets as he had red marks on his paws and kept chewing them - the vets sent me to skin specialist thought he had allergies and was sensitive to food etc - at only 4 months ol he had 4 pages of vet history numerous sprays and had his diet changed about 5 times. The bill totaled up to 600.00 in a month and insurance wouldn't pay out as vets put in his records that he had skin issues an thT these were noticed the first day the policy was started and the insurance had put an exclusion for skin issues on his policy meaning any bills for that would never be covered.

At this point after paying 600.00 for
Diesel when he was 3 months old and 600.00 worth of vets bills that was not covered by insurance an advise from the vet that it could go into thousands to find out what his allergies/skin conditions were and being no further forward to any explanations, my mum and dad advised I would have to hand him back to the breeder as I couldn't afford to keep him to make him better

I was devastated and it was he worst day of my life - I felt I had let him down and faced losing my baby. It was that day that we went to the breeders, they advised that they would take him to their vets for a second opinion and I had to hand him over to them for a week to get him seen to and treated - dependent on the outcome would depend if my baby came home.

I was that devastated my neighbors thought he had died. Luckily the breeders vet found he had harvest mites and treated him with an antibiotic jag and a frontline spray costing a total of just 30.00. Within the week he was back to full health and back home with no further issues. I was over the moon!!! However I still had a n outstanding bill of hundreds to pay myself as insurance wouldn't pay out for the fees I had paid my vet ......

Soooo - my mum has contacted the vet as I am having to pay them 50.00 a month til it's paid off and spoke to our now previous vet advising of the outcome of the new vet and how disappoint we were as we almost had to give him up, I had been with that vet for 10 years and have paid thousands from previous rabbits that have had cancer etc - one rabbit totaled over 5k (covered by insurance)
After much convo back and forth the vet has advised that he agrees that they missed the harvest mites as it wasn't checked for and that even the skin specialist had let me and diesel down, he has said that he will be discussing a full refund for all diesels trwtment with the skin specialist - this is excellent news (our vet is also the owner of the practice) however it still does not help that I Now have a skin exclusion on diesels policy thanks to the vet missing something so simple however that is something I will have to work on next - excellent news though and here is hoping it goes in my favor

That's fantastic news  :D. Perhaps your vet could write to the insurance company?

It would be great if you could get the money back. So glad Diesel is better now, remember reading your threads at the time and was so heart broken for you all  as you were unsure as to what it was making him poorly.

Good news. Fingers crossed here too. It seems like a no brainer to me. You paid for unnecessary treatment due to negligence on their part. Deffinately get both vets to contact your insurers to get the clause removed. Good luck.
On a totally different tack. Here's a pup pic of my boy Dickon. I lost him to cancer this summer but your boy reminds me of him soo much!

That's great news :D

I really hope you get a full refund Charlene and I think you should have another go at getting the skin condition exclusion removed from Diesel's policy. By refunding you surely the vet is effectively admitting that there was a misdiagnosis?

That excellent news!! :D :luv: Hope they cough up! x
It's funny how vets can go all around the house's for something that could of been cured so easily...
Reminds me of my Chocolate Lab Star I had years ago, when she was suffering with itchy skin and hair loss. I spent hundreds on skin scrapes, steroids, shampoo. I changed her diet, changed her bedding and so on... The problem still continued and the vets couldn't find out what was causing the it. They wanted me to spend a further £500+ to do some allergy tests on her! :o Which I would have gladly spent if it meant finding out what was wrong with her. But I decided to take it upon myself and looked up her symptoms and talk to a few people. I found out that she had the same symptoms of a common hormone disease which some bitches can suffer from.
I mentioned it to the vet and asked for some blood test to be done. The bloods came back which confirmed my suspicions, and the only cure was getting her spayed. Within a couple of weeks her skin cleared up and the hair grew back. Problem solved and that only cost me £150!
I do believe that some vets (like car mechanics) like to try and cash in by giving treatment and tests that is unnecessary and very costly  >:(

Good news, I hope you get it sorted. We had something similar with our Spud, saw about 4 vets at the practice, X-rays, blood tests, cost about
£350. In the end they found out it was an infection of his anal glands. OH complained to the practice manager and got a refund for some of it.
It is annoying when they diagnose something, you pay, go home and after a couple of days realise that the treatment is not working and have to go back and pay again.
Does anyone ask for a refund in an instance like this?

Hope you can get it sorted and your insurance as well
