Insurance-PDSA, AXA or More Than???
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:27:07 PM »
Hello!
Im just looking at insurance for Sandon, the best insurance is coming up as PDSA , More Than or AXA - PDSA and AXA pay up to £7k just paying the excess of £70 but more than ask for excess plus 10% of vets fee's - does anyone have any advice as to which is the best one?
Im thinking just paying excess sounds preferable as fingers crossed nothing will happen but you never know.
Does anyone have any experience of PDSA , More Than or AXA? AXA are coming up really cheap £14 so im dubious! AXA offer:

Veterinary fees  - £7,000 Per period of insurance
Third party liability - £2,000,000 Per incident
Emergency boarding kennels and cattery fees -£100 (max £750) Per week
Daily minding £100 (max £750) Per week
Advertising costs £1,000 Per incident
Theft or straying £750 Per incident
Death caused by illness up to £1,000 Per incident

Does this seem ok? It just seems so cheap! Also is it better to have 7k per period of insurance or per illness?
Sorry for the questions!

One of the things to consider with insurance is lifetime cover. If Sandon became ill and was diagnosed with something that would require medication and vet checks for the rest of his life and maybe surgery in the future if the condition worsened, would the insurance continue to pay out year after year? Or would they limit cover to a certain amount of money or a set period of time?

In my opinion lifetime cover is important. My 8 year old Cocker was diagnosed with a condition called Dry Eye three years ago. He has eye ointment every day and a specialist vet check every 6 months, average cost about £200 per year. I had to pay a £50 excess on the very first claim but since then I've been able to claim everything because he has lifetime cover for the condition. He also has some disc damage and I claimed about £2,000 for an MRI scan and other diagnostics at the time. Luckily he's fine and hasn't needed surgery, but if he did he'd still be covered because of the lifetime cover.

Another thing to consider is that many insurers charge a very low price when you sign up to them in order to get your custom, then hike up the price when you first renew even if you haven't made any claims.

Hope that helps :D. Insurance is a real minefield and choosing the right one is very difficult.

Just got a quote from LV Di, £2 per month cheaper than Argos and £5,000 per condition instead of £7,000 per year.

Roxy is insured through More Than and we have made a few claims this year - total value of the claims for her leg will be in the region of £1500. They have paid out promptly and with no hassle for us - our vet filled in the forms and sent them off. We were paying around £12.50 a month this year for her. We have just got the renewal and it's gone up to about £18 a month for next year (she's 2 now) - don't think that's too bad really but not sure.

Bobby is insured through AXA  - he is 10 months old and we are paying about £13.50 a month for him. We made claims for him this year too when he had his giardiasis so no doubt his premiums will go up too. Again no problems with payouts from Axa.

Hope this helps.

Be careful with a policy that asks for 10% of the vets fees.  I was with More Than and the excess at the time was £70 or 15% of the vets fees and while they paid up superfast the excess cost me £500 in the end on a bill of just over £4k.  A fixed excess is definitely better.

We're with Axa too. Have made a claim and they have paid up so seem pretty good so far.

I am with Axa for all of mine now. Jacob's renewal just came through and I was really worried as I have used the maximum 7k per year for the last 2 years but its gone up less than £1 a month so it £16 something.
