Insurance?
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:44:11 PM »
What should I be looking for in an insurance? What are the things to try and have included? (I don't understand it at all).

insurance completely baffles me too  :005:
What I learnt is that it is very important to have lifetime cover, in case your dog develops a long term medical condition that will need treatment or medication for the rest of their lives. If you don't get lifetime cover the insurance company can class long term medical issues as a pre existing condition, and therefore exclude it from any policy you take out in the future.

Have a read around these boards. It is a lot to take in. We went with Axa in the end, lifetime cover with £75 excess. Not claimed anything yet, and touch wood, hope I won't have to for a long time. I have peace of mind knowing it is there, and wouldn't be without it now. It would destroy me if something happened to Bingley and I couldn't afford his treatment.

Bingley's is about £14 per month this year, but i fully expect it to go up when it comes to renewal, as they all seem to do this after the first year.
Having said that Bingley's cover is up to £7000 per year, but I think this is in total and not per condition. Lots of people seem to have cover that provides a certain amount per condition, and I've begun to think that long term this may be a better option. I'm thinking about it now because if and when we go make a claim we'll have to stick with whoever we are with. It throws up all kinds of debates in our house  :005:
Petplan is very good I think, but their premiums are slightly higher.

John Lewis is good IMO. I pAy £20 per month for Dennis , had 2 big claims £7000 ish and £6000ish over last 2 years. It's upto £7500 a year. Douglas John Lewis again I pay £13 per month and is goes upto £10500 a year. Never claimed anything for Douglas but for Dennis they payed my vet and specialist direct meaning I have never been out of pocket.

That was one of the issues we had was that we always had to find the money first and then claimed (which was never straight forward with missing documents etc) which could and did take up to 2 months.

From my experience John Lewis have paid direct to the specialist and the vet , I only had to pay the excess. In the case where I took Dennis to chestergates , they were doing an MRI and surgery , chestergates called through to make sure we were covered before they would treat him. I paid excess there and then and filled in a claim form to say pay vet direct. At my normal vets surgery I give them a signed claim form and they do the rest.

My vet completes the claim form for me, no charge :dunno:  Last time we claimed the form went in to my vets (I just signed it), they filled it out and sent it, the insurance company notified me within a week that they had the form, the claim was then paid in a month.   It came back to me the same time as it appeared on my credit card bill so I didn't really lose out (apart from the excess....)
