Insurance increases? Is this statement from Petplan true?
« on: September 16, 2012, 06:04:59 PM »
Here is my dilemma (and my 2nd thread.....sorry!)

John Lewis (Greenbee) were £17 a month three years ago when we first insured Brody. They now want £30pm. We did claim this year for emergency vet fees/sickness/night time call out fee etc. Which came to about £170

I'm looking at AXA who quote £11!!!! Who I expect to go up year on year and certainly after any claim! I can see this is possibly an introductory quote until they have me!!

I'm considering Petplan as they say they won't increase their prices if you make a claim (although I'd obviously expect some sort of yearly increase.

Will you increase my premium if I make a claim?
No we will not. As a responsible pet insurer we wouldn't do anything to discourage our clients from getting their dog, cat or rabbit treated when they are unwell or injured. It is for this reason that we do not have 'no claims discounts'

Do I go with a cheaper premium and the unknown or pay for a policy that won't change too much each year? Is this statement true of Petplan?

Any policy I take will be lifetime cover and I prefer to stick with a company who's main business is insurance so not keen on Argos, Sainsburys etc in case they pull out of the Market.

I would say petplan are saying they won't increase premium just because you make a claim but I don't think that means they will never increase your premiums for other reasons.

I am with the kennel club for my 2 and there premiums go up every year, not by a great deal but a £1 or so a month ... Apparently because of the dogs getting older

Yes, Petplan premiums do go up every year, but that will happen whether you make a claim or not - it's just the way the insurance game works!  We have used Petplan for years and never once have they quibbled about a claim - they have paid us out thousands of pounds over the 3 1/2 years that our darling Cassie (GR) had epilepsy.  Our premiums were £42 a month, but her drugs alone cost over £60 a month at the beginning of her illness, and at the end £160 a month.  That doesn't include the regular blood tests she had to have, and the specialist treatment.  They even paid out when she had to be pts after an accident in July this year.  So, I'd say go for Petplan.  The premiums for our Ozzy (18 weeks old now) are about £27 a month and we are fully expecting no problems when we make a large claim for Ozzy's op to remove his eye.

Yes, but have you made a claim or know anyone who has?  The measure of an insurance company is not in the price of the premiums, or even in the cover they offer, but in the service one receives when making a claim - Petplan goes to the top of the list for us!

This is what is important to me!!

I have discovered the reason behind the JL increase. They have changed underwriters (To RSA Insurance) and are honouring the old policies, mine is called "Level 3" and has £7000pa lifetime cover. However, I can change to the new policy called "plus" which has been quoted at £18.64 for £7500pa lifetime cover!

BUT........this would be the same as switching companies and therefore any previous conditions (claimed for or not as someone pointed out) will NOT be covered just as if I were to switch to a new company.

Hi i have Blossom insured "for life" with Petplan, it is quite dear £32 a month I think, but since May i have claimed for Blossom to have a lump removed from the top of her head and again in July to have her re operated on due to an allergy to the buried stitches! Both times costing approx £200. I can honestly say Petplan paid out no questions asked and within 10 days of my claims going in. I really cannot fault their service at all.
Only my experience though I hope this helps. :D xx

We have our 2 insured with sainsbury's, about £17 a month each, with a whole life cover of £7500 per condition. When Fudge developed cirhhosis of the liver two years ago they paid out very quickly to the tune of £5500 between December and May when she died and even paid us £300 when she finally had to be pts because she was under 8 when she died. Direct were very slow payers when Danny had his lymphoma, but did pay out the maximum £6000, though we willingly paid another £2000 to keep him until the chemo was no longer working.

I started off paying around £23 a month with PetPlan when Brodie is a puppy, now she is four and I am paying £40... I have made a few claims, nothing major, and they have paid each time with no problem. They even paid for her dental work when she had to get some teeth out, which I think a lot of insurers don't do. I think they are very, very good, but I dread what I will have to pay when she is older. I've also read on here that once she reaches a certain age I'll have to pay 20% of any claim I make - I emailed PetPlan about that the other day but haven't heard back from them yet.

I got such a shock when I heard this, and still can't believe it. I wouldn't mind so much if I wasn't already spending a fortune every month! Have already started saving up for it :-\
