Has anyone had vets fees in excess of £7K in 1 year?
« on: July 28, 2012, 12:41:04 PM »
Hi All,

Looking to sort out Alfie's insurance as his free 4 weeks with Petplan is about to expire. I have the other boys and cats insured with Petplan and despite the cost have always been very impressed with the way claims have been dealt with. I intend insuring Alfie with Petplan but cannot decide on whether to go for the £7,000 or £12,000 annuals claim limit. The others are currently on the £7,000 plans.

Has anyone on here had fees in excess of £7000 in any one year? (for 1 or more conditions)

Thanks, Jacqui

When our border collie was diagnosed with cancer and I was told her treatment would have been £5000 + and that was 8 years ago but unfortunately we she only lasted 10 days after she was diagnosed  :012: . But we were ready to remortgage our house because she never has insurance so now both dog and rabbit have insurance

I went for the £7000 limit for Archie but when Dickon was diagnosed with anal gland cancer I was told that if I wanted to put him through surgery and chemo then the first surgery alone would be between 2 and 3 thousand with chemo and possibly more surgery on top so I guess it soon adds up. He wasn't insured but I had a savings account for him since he was a pup. Three vets I spoke to advised against putting him through it so I took their advice.

My aunt came close with her cocker Bliss :-\. I can't remember the exact amount but she was starting to think about credit cards when unfortunately we got the bad news the cancer was in her spine and she made the decision to have her pts :'(. Scarily, this money mounted up after only seven weeks.

Jacob is with Axa and has the 7k limit which we went over by quite a bit last year. He had 2 hip replacements which came to just over 6k and then the second hip failed so he needed it done again. Thankfully my vet paid for the third operation (he kind of admitted fault) as I wouldn't have been able to afford it.

When Dennis was 21 months old he burst a disc in his spine. Rushed to the vets and transfered to a specialist, MRI scan £1800 surgery the day after i think it was about £3500 plus A couple of weeks stay @£100 a night , drugs , physio etc. In total it came very close to his £7500 insurance limit tbh i thought it was going to go over. On his 3rd birthday it happened again , had to have surgery etc but his recovery was much quicker and that came to £6.5k.

Thanks for all your replies. I have decided to get Alfie cover with £12,500 annual limit just in case. I hope it never happens but want the piece of mind  ;)

It can mount up very quickly.  My first cocker Indie was diagnosed with FN and in the space of a week her treatment went to £4.5k

Yep, if you can afford it, go for the highest cover you can possibly get!  My poor little Buffy (now at the Bridge) quickly ran up over £3,000 in just over 6 months as she had hydrotherapy sessions as well as lots of vet visits, stitches etc.
Due to our current financial situation, we have had to cut back on our dogs' insurance and am now worrying that Josie's recent ops won't be covered by their lower rate so if you can afford it, best not to have to worry as you never know what might happen!
Penny,   Dexter (cavalier x poodle), Alfie (Whippet cross)  and  Maximus the cocker spaniel!!

RIP my 2 most gorgeous cocker girls - Buffy and Harriet - both waiting for me at the bridge. Joined by my beloved Josie taken too soon and Suki aged 13 :(

Treatment can be sooo expensive so, for peace of mind, it's best to go with the highest cover you can afford, you never know what's round the corner.  ;)
