I read on an earlier thread that some COL members used animal friends pet insurance. Not sure how that would compare as we are between dogs at the moment and didn't insure last time. As the dog got older it seemed putting money aside ourselves was worth the risk as many expensive treatments would be too much for an elderly dog, and the premiums are very large and you have to pay 25% of costs with many companies with an older dog.
