Title: Moving to wet food
Post by: GinnyB on September 24, 2020, 03:44:47 PM
Mali is 13 now and whilst she has always been a healthy dog (with managed Cushings disease), she is now starting to show signs of age and has recently had a number of heath issues.

One of the things I’ve noticed is that she prefers not to have anything too hard to eat. She has been fed Arden Grange dry food since being a puppy and has been on their senior brand for a few years now but I’ve noticed that she leaves more than she eats. I’ve recently been supplementing her meal with a wet food pouch (which she wolfs down!) but I’m not sure it’s as nutritious as the AG. I’d like to look at moving her wholly onto wet food but I want one that is as good as the AG has been.

All her teeth are sound so that’s not an issue and she is a healthy weight at ten kilos. Does anyone have anything they can suggest as an alternative?

Ollie is 13 soon and has a really sensitive tum and any slight change can cause an upset .....he is really settled on this Natures Deli Turkey and Chicken.

I also give him the salmon too and add white fish with this plus one crushed yumove tab.  There is an Iams for older dogs which is small sized and I have used this....but it gets tossed out of the bowl :D

The turkey/chicken is senior and has added supplements for older dogs.

I think there are others around...but Ollie has to stay away from potato based foods.

I feed both mine Forthglade wet food, it is hypoallergenic, they do a variety of menus, including for puppies and older dogs (mine have the regular grain free) and a 'Just' range which is 90% meat and you add your own mixer to it

https://forthglade.com/shop-dog/wet-dog-food

I also add a few of Natures Menu Mighty Mixer biscuits to each meal to add a bit of crunch.

Hope this helps

Archie has always been on wet food. Because of allergies he has to have a fish diet so we use Fishmongers Finest. We get the mixed pack - salmon, trout and fish flavours. He does brilliantly on it.

Just a wee note to say that AG do a very limited option of wet food, but if she is doing well on, and likes AG already, it might be worth looking at.

I did look at that but there seemed to be little choice. Maybe some of the pet sites have some other options x

I was surprised at hoe few options for wet food AG had.

Not sure if you have already decided on a food, but just wanted to add another option! Currently away in the motor home, and as always, have to pop into a pet shop, just in case! Anyway, picked up a few trays of Symply wet food for Miss Fussy Pants  :005:  She hoovered it. It is a decent quality and a good variety of flavours. Might be worth a look.

Good to know, thank you. I picked up a couple of cans of Lizzies Kitchen, just because I could get my hands on it right away. Mali loved it but I don’t think it’s the one. It was more of a loaf and I prefer to have a bit of sauce in it so it’s easier to hide tablets 🙄

The things we do!

Oh yes, subterfuge is key  :lol2: If you popped the food in the microwave for half a minute it will soften it and it will smell nice too, might be a bit of a distraction.

My dogs have to have have wet food . I used to  be a food snob, and even made my own recipes. My son brought his pup up on Butchers grain free Tripe Loaf mix, and she looks fantastic,  slim, shiny , clean teeth and ears. So. I had a go, and studied review sites, and Butchers own website. I am happy with all that, and the dogs adore it and look great.  I once had a leaky tin, and was given a 24 pack replacement worth £13.
It’s worth buying a tin or two to  try.  The Tripe loaf  suits mine best. I am sceptical of foods that have a minimal dash of certain herbs just to sound good.

Thank you for that. I’ve been using Pedigree sachets but I know people have issues with pedigree so whilst I was happy to use it as “garnish”  :005: to hide pills, I wasn’t sure about using it as a full meal. It’s good to know that you don’t need to spend a fortune to feed them a good quality product. X
