Title: cleaning my puddle loving puppy
Post by: hilhames on October 19, 2013, 01:03:14 AM
My four month old  goldenpuppy discovered puddles a couple of weeks ago!  Whats the best way to get her clean for the house?  She hates the sink - a washing up bowl on the floor might be better?  In terms of drying, was thinking of getting some sort of absorbent towel I have seen this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Groomers-AQ001-Aquasorb-Towel/dp/B003BOCFQ4/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1382139052&sr=1-2&keywords=towels+for+dogs (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Groomers-AQ001-Aquasorb-Towel/dp/B003BOCFQ4/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1382139052&sr=1-2&keywords=towels+for+dogs)
Can anyone recommend the quickest less fuss method, especially as she gets bigger!  The hose?? Thanks

My way,     I keep puppy wipes & a towel in the car, give a good rub with these, then much to her disgust I put her into a small human fleece (from  a charity shop ; with the  arms cut short) , back to front & zip her in, also I give her a biscuit bone to make it less unpleasant, by the time we get home she is a lot drier.    Personally I don't bath very often, I'm of the school who think it kills off the natural oils, when she is dry a nice brush.   If her paws or ear ends are very muddy they are dipped into tepid water.   You could do the same at home, or another way at home is to give a treat that keeps her quite for a while, on an old towel in the kitchen, the towel helps to dry her underside.   I admit in the summer, yes I use a GENTLE hose pipe with a spray nozzle.

Jayne (Pearly) introduced me to a large weedkiller size plant sprayer (5 litres).  I now have one which goes in the car with water in.  Jinley gets a  hose before she gets in the car while the mud is still fresh.

Must say it is great, by the time we get home she just needs some dry clean spray on and left to sleep it off.

That is a great idea Pat/Jayne - have you got a picture of it?

This is how I dry Brodie. She had to have a lot of baths recently for a skin condition, so plenty of practice!

I always put her in the bath and use the shower - it's over much faster that way. I use an Easidry cloth (similar to an Aquasorb, it's brilliant, can really recommend it) to get as much moisture off as possible. Then I use a microfibre towel. After I've got her as dry as possible, I pop her in her drying jacket and put the fire on.

This step is the most important :shades:. She then lies on me until she's nice and dry and I'm damp. Very important step and one that can't be missed out :lol2:

Whenever she gets muddy I do the same as julie1 and wait until she's dry and brush her. Unless she's VERY muddy, that is.

I just start from the beginning as I mean to go on. We have a large retangular bowl outside which is half filled with warm water, enough to cover legs and tummy feathering. The dog is placed in the bowl and a hand is placed on their back until they settle, once settled one hand remains on the dog at all times whilst the other cleans the feathering. The dog is then removed from the bowl and all 4 legs are squeezed out by hand, then a towel is placed over the dogs back and draped down both sides of the dog and each leg is done individually whilst dog is between my legs whilst I stand over them. Once that's done they are let into the kitchen and they lie on more towels to dry out further or I put Equafleece jumpers on them all.

At the beginning when they are pups they usually try to get out of the bowl but they soon realize the only way they get to come back in is by having a wash and a dry off. Breakfast awaits them inside and since cockers are usually food orientated co operating wins over every time just some take a little longer to win over.

There are some good ideas here.  Thank you all.

JennyBee, you carry a full sized muddy cocker upstairs?

Bluegirl, the rectangular bowl outside seems like a good idea, is this just a washing up bowl or have you found something better?  You leave the dog outside, then come in and get the water in a watering can?

I will get an Easidry cloth seems a good idea.  Also a microfibre towel, are these all born equal?

With regard to ordinary wet, slightly muddy paws after just going outside in current weather to the loo, is a microfiber towel the best bet?  We have carpet everywhere except in kitchen  so I have to be fussy.   What is best way to teach her to pick up her paws for me?   At the moment she doesn't mind me doing front paws but, she wriggles away from me doing the back.  At the moment she is turfed out a lot to wee, being only 15 weeks old, I guess later on this will be a lot  less frequent!

At first Fudge wasn't too keen on having his paws wiped and we used to have such fun drying him!!

We persevered and after a while he got used to it - so much so he now the cheeky boy lifts his paws up!

Dry clean spray, what is that, please?

Hiya, we use an old washing up bowl by the front door & a old large thermos flask filled with warm water .. All placed ready for our return.. Millie like most cockers hates her paws & legs being washed , grumbles alot but tolerates it, probably knowing there is a bikkie once its all done. :D

JennieBee - is this the Easydry you mentioned, bigger than Aquasorb-

We've got a Hozelock 7 litre porta shower (£19 from Amazon) and a plastic tray, about18" x 24" x4" deep, from a local garden centre. I think it was about £5.
Before coming into the kitchen they're stood in the tray and given a quick hose down just outside the kitchen door and the water emptied down a nearby drain. The 7 litre capacity is more than enough to clean the worst off two muddy cockers and a mix of 1/3 water from the hot tap + 2/3 from the cold with a small squish of washing up liquid seems to be about right for shifting the majority of the mud. Being pressurised it's handy for getting the water up underneath them, armpits, bits etc., while there's sufficient force to really shift the mud from between their pads and claws as well.
Once they've gone through their spin dry cycle outside they're clean enough for the trip to the bathroom if they need a more thorough shower or into the kitchen for a towelling down.
If we're taking them by car for a walk where they may get muddy we simply put the filled porta shower in the boot along with a few towels.

Bob.

Yes that's it. It's the medium I have and I think it is a little on the large side - maybe the small one would have been better. It is brilliant, though, it was my groomer that recommended it and it really does get rid of a large amount of the water from Brodie's very thick coat.  If you get one remember to keep it damp and in its box when you're not using it.

My bathroom is just beyond the front door, with wooden/tiled floors inbetween, so no need for any extra carrying thankfully! It's just an ordinary microfibre towel I have, that I bought in a pet shop. Quite cheap, so not sure if the dearer ones are better.

Forgot to mention the brilliant Wet Mat that I won on here - I can now put it on my knee and no longer get wet on our after bath cuddles :005:

thank you JennyBee , I will look at the measurements tomorrow and perhaps get the smaller size at least for while Chloe is a puppy - its going so quickly thought, at 16 weeks she has doubled the weight she was when I got her!
