Lady - Dislocated hip
« on: September 30, 2016, 11:54:20 AM »
Poor Lady has dislocated her hip - unfortunately is the good one she did and most likely because that one was taking the burden of the diseased one. She did it last saturday when I was out walking the dogs so had to ring vets and ring for a lift from my house then had to carry a very soggy dog that was in lots of pain for over 20 min across the park. They kept her overnight at the emergency vets then she looked fine the next day as when the put it back in she was walking as if nothing happened but she was then on crate rest after that.

Sadly on tuesday she did it again while in the crate (I'd nipped out to take Stella for a quick walk) so a quick return to my own vets who were then going to xray her the next day so I took her home gave her tramadol and while I was getting ready to take her back in the vet nurse called saying they felt she should go straight to an orthopaedic specialist which is where she then went and she's now been staying at the other side of Newport since then.

Her op has been held up as the discovered she had lungworm so they have been doing loads of pre-med checks and finally she will be operated on today - they are going to toggle it to hold the joint in place and attach it with a toggle that is on her pelvis. There is a risk of failure of this procedure but I got the impression its the best place to start as not all fail.

If anyone sees me pushing a working cocker around don't laugh - she gets stressed with out me so it may be the only choice I have so she gets out and about

Well phone call from the vet yesterday was a surprise not least because it was earlier than expected - his words work something strange but good news. It seems when she was under he initially manipulated her hip and when it went back in it wouldn't budge no matter how hard the vet tried so at the moment he's loathed to actually operate as usually the hip is unstable when he tries to pull it back out.

So they brought her round and will see how she is on Monday - she's still there with nursing/vet care on tap if needed but the ortho vet said he'll be back in on monday and review then.

I feel we might be back where we were on Sunday night but at least this time she's under the care of an ortho specialist this time and is staying there to see if the hip's going to stay in - I will still have to be careful when she gets back (all I can say is thank goodness for insurance and while my worry is how to pay the excess of 10%, as I don't get paid till next Friday but will cross that bridge when I come to it, at least I don't have to pay the other 90% and she can stay where she is without any additional worries as the insurance company will pick the tab up)

Would be brilliant if the problem has been solved without actually having to operate! Who knows, - maybe you'll be lucky! - Keeping fingers crossed for you!

Hopefully am getting one of those bike trailer/jogger ones as the dog prams really do look like you're taking them out as a fashion statement and its not really me (plus they have better wheels on the bike ones)

She's back and not happy about exchanging her vet kennel for the crate but she has a habit of boinging around if left to her own devices - she may be getting on in years but she certainly doesn't like to show it even when injured. Made me laugh each time vets and nurses rang me 2-3 times a day they all mentioned her eating in a surprised voice - it seems she didn't let a thing like being away from home put her off her food LOL.
