Bronte is having collapsing episodes.
« on: March 11, 2016, 08:10:47 AM »
I've not been here for quite some time now but hoping that someone may have experienced the same thing. Bronte my 7 yr old collapsed in January, it was the most frightening thing I had seen as I believed she was about to die in front of me. She started choking for no apparent reason after returning to kitchen after last piddles at night. I heard choking noises, rushed over, her mouth was wide open and I could see nothing but sweeped her mouth anyway. She didn't paw her mouth at all but it looked like she was choking, she then started to collapse and turn blue, she became limp and at that point I thought she was gasping her last breathes. I attempted heimlich and was frantic. Her eyes looked distant but then very smalls signs of life happened, she came round, appeared slightly confused and ws back to near normal within 30mins. We took her to vet I said it started like a choking but ended up looking like she was coming round from a seizure. I hadn't ever seen anything like this before. She decided it was a choking probably due to an allergy. All was well then 4 wks later it happened again. Exactly the same scenario, right after piddle times, this time she collapsed at back door. I gave anti histamine but she had recovered as previously. We watched her like a hawk. Then it happened again on Tuesday evening, practically another month later. This time she had collapsed on patio, hubby said she was grey this time but she came round again. I took her to vets yesterday as it needs investigating further. I'm not convinced its allergies. Vet couldn't make sense of it and still things its a choking. She is booked in for investigations under GA next wednesday. He did however mention something he had recently read about called entrapped epiglottis and when I got home I read about it and it does seem to fit the symptoms. Has anyone had problems with entrapped epiglottis, laryngeal spasm or problems associated with elongated soft palate. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. x

Never had this in dogs but LS in humans isn't uncommon- whooping cough often is the cause. Don't know if there's a bacteriological infection going on here- I'm sure your vet will get to the bottom of it. In humans what often happens is a loss of consciousness causes the throat to relax and they can breathe again- so could be the same here. It sounds so frightening, so good luck with a diagnosis.

Poor Bronte and poor you. It must have been horrendous to see.

Am I right in saying that every time this has happened Bronte has either just been outside or is still outside?

Could there possibly be something harmful in your garden that she has eaten, plants maybe? I know there is a long list of things found in the garden that can be poisonous to dogs.

That's what occured to me as it does seem to be following a pattern but no doubt the vets will take all that into consideration. I do feel for you, it must be dreadfully frightening. Hope you can get to the bottom of it soon and that Bronte's ok, it must be so stressful for her too, poor girl.
All the best, do keep us updated.

Poor Bronte and what a shock for you :016: like the others have suggested, it does sound like it is being caused by something in the garden, is it possible that perhaps a neighbour had sprayed some sort of insect killer or weed killer, that stays in the amotosphere. i hope that the vet can get to the bottom of this. gentle squidges for Bronte :luv: and  :bigarmhug:to you.

Only common thing is being outside. I'm following her around and she isn't eating anything and if she was surely it would happen more often. First vet thought allergy related but now after 3 episodes this one doesn't. Its really scary. And as for bacterial infection she did have a nasty one back in november. All this lot started 2mths later.

I have nothing to add but just wish you all the best and I hope that something is found to explain it and stop any future episodes.

Bronte had another collapse tonight. She was investigated under GA for retroverted epiglottis and reasons why she should turn blue but nothing found. She is to see specialist on monday 4th. Part of this collapse was videoed. I found her collapsed on the grass and looked this time like she was paddling. I missed that bit but rest was captured. It sends me into complete panic as she really looks like she is about to die. She turned blue, went limp but I know for part she was breathing.

I've just watched the video. Well done for staying so calm for her Karen and for getting the episode on video. I hope it helps the vet with a diagnosis  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Heavens! Poor you, that must have been so frightening but you handled it amazingly calmly. Well done! Lots of  :bigarmhug: for little Bronte, do hope the vet can sort it for you soon, - an excellent idea to video it!

Thank you, I was far from calm. I kept picking her up because it looks like she is about to die, although looking back at video I can see she is blinking. I remmember the Vet asking is she breathing and I made a conscious note to check, but even so she was blue and nothing about it until she starts to come round is reassuring. Just wondering if it maybe looks familiar to some one?
