Advice please for Woofies Operation
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:23:56 PM »
I have suddenly started to panic about tomorrow.

I know not to feed him after 8pm tonight, take his water up in the morning.  Have been told he can still have his morning walk before we go in and that I can take a blanket for him.

Last time he had an general anaesthetic two years ago I think we bought some special food that the vet recommended that was easy on his tummy.

Questions are:

When and what can I feed him after his op?

Are there any natural remedies that will help him heal any quicker?

I think that I can remember he didn't do a pooh for about 24/48 hours last time - is that about right?

Is there anything else that I can do to make him feel better?

Thank you  :-*

Hi
Charlie has just had a small operation and the vet talked me through things afterwards, they provided the food.It might be best to take a second set of ears with you, if you think you might forget what they say. They advised me to keep him warm and calm ( ::) impossible) for the rest of the day.
He didn't pooh till the next day, I guess cos they miss a meal.

My vets usually say scrambled egg or fish or chicken and rice. Missing food for a day isn't a problem and he may be feeling too woozy to have much.  I'm sure things will be fine, just keep yourself too busy to worry!!!

Another chicken/scrambled egg reccomendation from my vet. Anything that is gentle on their tum. Pepper's had 4 operations and I've always given her scrambled egg and some pasta. Kye would have to have chicken as he won't eat scrambled egg

I've always fed them once I've got them home, but usually Pepper came around about 1-2pm and I didn't pick her up till 6.. so would get fed about 7pm, if that helps you any.

Pepper's a naturally good healer (thank goodness) so not sure on the healthy stuff. I usually add some live yogurht for a couple of days after to food as well, as sometimes ops give them upset tums.

same here, we've always been given a post op sheet from the vets too.

I would think Arnica might help healing too

Will be thinking of you tomorrow - keep busy  :-*

lots of arnica, you can start that pre-op as well.  Will really help with the healing.

chicken and rice would be Jarv's sick-boy diet of choice  ;)

I would be tempted to get some Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence for when he comes home too - will help relax him if he's out of sorts  :luv: :luv:

Another chicken/scrambled egg reccomendation from my vet.

And mine...

When Mindy was spayed last month she was really out of it the first evening & didn't want to eat anything.  Next day her appetite was back with a vengance so we fed her little & often (rice, fish, chicken).  The vet also gave us full aftercare information & pain relief medication.

Good luck, hope all goes well for him  :luv:

Thank you for your good thoughts.

I am sat at work trying not to think of his sad face as he was led away by the Vet.  He was so good and Jason (the vet) said he would take good care of our big guy  :luv:  :luv:

There were three people before us though that were being booked in for surgery and one came in after so I don't know what time he will be able to come home.

Aw hope it all goes well for Woofie today.. it's horrible seeing them taken away, I always want to settle them myself but I guess no fuss is probably better for the dog, hard as it is for us :-\.

Lets hope this will be the last of it and he'll be right as rain very soon  :-* :-*

Haven't heard anything yet Jenny, thank you for asking  :-*

Think the Vet had quite a big surgical list today. Said we could probably bring him home about 4pm but he would ring as soon as he had finished to let us know how it has gone.

I am at work, it helps to be kept busy but I still hate waiting.

Vet has just phoned to say Woofie has come through the operation fine  :D

Had all five lumps removed, may have to wear a lampshade because of the one near his eye.

We paid to have the pre-op blood test done and his kidneys etc were all working fine.

And we can pick him up in an hour

Cant wait to see my Woofalump :luv:
