Is he getting old?
« on: March 08, 2009, 09:58:09 PM »
Woofie is suffering tonight.  We went on a cocker meet at Rother Valley Country Park (he has been loads of times before).  He did his usual haring about like a teenger (he will be 10 in May).

But he has been fast asleep all afternoon and is struggling to get on and off the sofa (quite stiff and looks sore).  The only time he has done this before is at the end of a holiday to Devon early last year when he had overdone it a bit.

He shouldn't be like this after just one walk.

Should I look to start giving him some supplements for his bones and if so can anyone recommend what kind.

Poor old Woofalump  :luv:

ETA I wormed him last night but that wouldn't make any difference would it?

Aww poor Woofalump, hope he's OK in the morning :-*

How about glucosamine http://www.dorwest.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GC or I sometimes add Rhus tox to Heidi if she's a bit stiff http://www.dorwest.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RHU6C

Awww poor boy.....it could be a good idea to start supplements if his joints seem a bit stiff...at the minute with lolas HD im using syn-flex which has glucosamine and chondroitin in it which are both good for joints and cartilage...she is also on Green Lipped mussle and EPO and like Jenny if she seems a bit sore i use Rhus Tox and Arnica  ;)
Hope he is back to his bouncy self soon  :-*

Thanks for the advice - do I give the glucosamine every day and then give the Rhus Tox when he seems to need it?

How is Lola at the moment - it must be worrying for you  :-*  Sending her gentle squishes  :-*

think I would give regular glucosimine and then top up with rhus tox/arnica if going to be longer walks or if gets wet/cold etc.

I tend to pop one on the food but my rights, rhus tox should be straight in the mouth.

He is back to normal this morning.  :luv:

Must have been the rain/cold wind that got into his bones.

Will definitely start with the Glucosamine when they arrive and am off buy the rhus tox now.

Glad Woofies feeling a little better.  I think it happens to both young and old alike.  Misha went to her first agility class since being spayed (only an hour), and then slept all afternoon.  Vet had given the all clear.  Right as rain the next day.

try the glucosimine and see how he goes.

If he is still bad I'd look at something called glucomax:

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Glucomax-Liquid/productinfo/GLU1/

It has the Glucosamine blended with MSM for joints but ALSO has devils claw in it, which is a hrebal pain killer, often used for arthritis in horses (and dogs but not so common)

I've known both a horse with arthritis (was on 1/2 to 1 sachet of bute a day) and a german shep with arthritis and cancer both benefit from using this actual suppliment.

I'd try the joint tablets first though. You can buy the devils claw seperately

http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/NoBute-Liquid-Devils-Claw-1L/productinfo/NOBUTE/

if you want to try using it as and when he's stiff.

I gave my last cocker, Sophie, glucosomine and chondroitin when she was 12 years old.  Although she would still happily walk miles she was looking a bit stiff when she got out of her bed.  The difference in her was amazing.  The stiffness when she got out of bed virtually disappeared and she was still walking 7 miles until just before she died aged 14.

Does anyone know what age is the best time to start giving these supplements.

Poor Woofie!  I know how he feels though, I think I'm getting old too!

Parker has times when he is stiff and a bit sore (all to do with his back and neck problems) and I keep a supply of Metacam at home for when this happens.  I just give it to him for a couple of days and he is as right as rain then.

Of course, because Parker spends 99% of his life snoring on the sofa, the days when he appears stiff when active are quite rare ::)!
