Hardly any 1st opinion veterinary practices will have MRI facilities due to cost and space, also demand. Referral for Peggy's problem is pretty standard, the vets are specialists who have studied for far longer and at higher levels in their chosen specialty as with doctors/surgeons/consultants in human medicine.

Also, many insurance companies will have the excess and a percentage of the bill payable by you once the pet reaches a certain age.

Yup I had to take my cat from Cardiff to Cam/Dursley in Gloucs for his MRIs (the vet practice there have a visiting MRI from Burgess every 2 weeks + speicalists in oncology, neurology etc.) - I had to pay a larger excess and 20% but vet practice were brill in negotiating half price for the 2nd MRI they requested months later - whole bill including 2 scans and operation were about £3000 but well worth the cost I spent as he's still here 3 yars later and fit and healthy. My vet sends a lot of pets to this vets or Bristol vet school or Swansea (orthopaedics) depending on ailment - he does it reasonably quickly though and doesn't spend your budget dithering around (until you have no money left for a referral like some general vets can do) which is fine by me. I went by train as well to get to the Gloucs vets.

PennyB ...

But at the end of the day all it gives is the practice to print money...I no we are insured..Its just the way that they add Theo's tops ups....I don't mind paying the excess...but to add 10% for the dog up to 10 and 20% for dogs over 10 years of age...That i have never claim for the over the years and to be penalize me by adding an extra 10% just because my dog is over 10 just beats me that i have never also calmed for is just beyond me... ....Chris

Oh what a traumatic time. So relieved she's coming through ok.Now I'll stop grumbling at the insurance renewal premiums that have just arrived. Money is the last thing to worry about when you have an emergency like this.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery xx

Yes you are right to say not to worry about the money...But it just Pees me of we are being ripped of as it is with out being ripped of any further.....Just thinking as to others others  less fortunate who are unable to pay for such an event happening...
