And by people I mean other cocker owners at obedience. They all seem surprised he is 13+ weeks.
I know asking how much a pup should weigh is like asking how long is a piece of string but I think you guys would have a better idea what was within the normal range than most.
We weighed him using the vets scales two days ago ( just walked in to weigh) and he was 4.8 kilos at 13 weeks 3days.
When he had his 12 week shot I asked the vet if his weight looked right and he said yes he was neither fat nor skinny, he doesn't seem thin just small.
He certainly has a healthy appetite, eats four times a day, has been wormed etc.
He comes from a highly reputable breeder in Australia, mum was a show pup who was too small to show in adulthood, dad is a show dog.
I'm not overly concerned we just want to love him, not love and show or love and breed, but I would be very interested in what you thought.
I did find an english weight chart that suggested 7 kilos was average for his weight.
Do you believe puppy size is a good indicator of future dog size?

Cockers come in a range of sizes. Fully grown ones on here I have seen seem to range from 8/9kg to 16kg. :o As long as he is healthy and growing properly, I wouldn't bother what people say - they probably just do it for something to say. At 13 weeks, I would really expect him to be tiny ;) :005: He may just turn out to be a pocket cocker - he won't be any less naughty though :lol2:

The size of a puppy's paws are a good indication of whether they will grow a lot. They tend to grow into their feet!

Murphy was small and skinny when we got him but people used to say he was going to be big because of his big paws. And they were right, he is a big lad at over 15kg the last time he was weighed.

If his mum was too small to show then perhaps Teddy takes after her and is on the small side. As you're not planning to show that won't be a problem. Sounds like he's healthy and fit, so I wouldn't worry.

Brodie was a tiny puppy - I couldn't even find a puppy collar to fit her! Now as an adult she's on the smaller side but definitely not one of the smallest cockers out there. I know a couple of cockers that are really small, and they are both very healthy (and very cute!) little dogs.

Not necessarily. Everyone said that about Coco as her paws are hoooge! She still hasn't grown into them and she is nearly 9! :005:

Thanks guys I'm not really worried just curious because of the comments. I don't mind if he's a little smaller, it will just make him easier to cuddle I guess.
As for paws they suit his size I think
He seems happy and healthy.
If I thought there was a problem I'd be down the vet in a flash, after just losing Charlie I'm not going to be taking the slightest chance.

Bea is often mistaken for a pup, she is two years old and her weight is 11.7kg, here is an example of her weight gain from 10 weeks old (17/8)
17/8 2.6kg
07/09 3.6kg
14/10. 6.3 kg
It took her a year to get to 10.1 kg
It really is not about weight but about health, there was a 6 month old who was bigger than Bea at the park recently, both where happy and healthy.
Maybe he dose take after his mum, it will make it easier to pick him up, cuddle him and you will have more room on the sofa etc,. :005:

But, as 8 Hairy Feet says, small but perfectly formed :luv: and, as long as he's fit and healthy I wouldn't worry too much, you can just cuddle him closer :005:

I had a look at my records and Maddie was nearly 5kg at 13 weeks and Bramble was just over 5. Neither are very big now. I think cockers generally are smaller than they used to be when we had our first cocker 35 years ago.
Body shape is much more important -which the Powerscourt site will tell you I think.

There is he most stunning cocker at The gun dog trainers, called Echo - she's tiny! Absolutely gorgeous girl who I thought was about 4 months old the first time I saw her.....she was 3 years old!

People often think Harry is a puppy as he is quite small boned, he looks fragile but believe me he is not :005: I am like you not worried about size, happy and healthy is more important.

Gemma is rocket rocket. 3 years old, 8kg and about 12 inches at the shoulder. She was bred to be small.
if ted is fit, healthy in every way then do not worry. Gemma can match any cocker for strength, stamina etc, infact when working small can be an advantage ;)

Small is beautiful. Enjoy your little man. No such luck here. Archie is 17kg. :o I'm just hoping he never actually grows into his mahoooosive paws!

I had a blenheim cavalier called Gemma who was small and often taken for a pup. In fact she was one of the stongest and fittest dogs I have had. Lived to be 16 and went climbing, sailing, canoeing and open water swimming. No one had ever told her she wasn't a rotweiller :blink:

I wouldn't worry. My Archie was tiny too. He was 1.2kg at 9 weeks. He is 4yrs old now and only 10kg. He has energy in abundance.....the best things come in little packages. As long as he is healthy that is all that matters
