Puppy pen
« on: August 23, 2018, 09:55:08 AM »
I am planning to get a pen for my 10 week working cocker puppy. There are so many on the Internet, I find it confusing . Any suggestions for a pen he can’t just climb out of?

Good question and something I had lots of problems with.

I bought a cheap puppy pen, which worked for a few days then he figured out that he could move the thing across the floor. So I had to tie the thing down which worked fine. Then he figured out that he could use his water bowl as a step if he tipped it over. I had it all on camera, he literally knocked it over and pushed it to the edge and scrambled over the bars  :005: he then ran around the house causing chaos
So I then had to create a roof for the pen, it was a nightmare  >:D

I think mine was a rare occurrence as my friends puppies didn't do this.

If I were buying one now, I would look at as big pen as possible and all tall sides.

Good luck

We used a whelping pen with a canvas crate inside.  She then progressed into the lounge (we are open plan) in just the crate but open, then progressed onto our bed :shades:

Many years ago we bought panels from a company that do lots of crates, beds, etc etc, so you can build a play pen to suit your circumstances - 15 years on, we still have it stored away (ready for our next doglet. The company is called Croft and are based in the UK.

I've used panels from Croft as well. I think there's an element of luck in that some puppies will learn to climb them and some won't. My now 9 year old had been used to a whelping pen with his breeder and when he came to me he absolutely loathed being crated, even with the door open, perhaps because it had a roof, unlike the whelping pen. So I gave up with the crate, bought some puppy panels and set the pen up in a corner of a room, so the pen had walls immediately behind two sides of it. He took to it immediately and was much more settled at night.

I still have the panels and they come in handy if I need to use one as a temporary barrier across a doorway, or if I want the back door open to cool the house but don't want the dogs to go out.

I got a puppy pen from Argos, it can also be used to partition off a room etc and we still have it .

I've had a look and it looks like they have stopped doing it but this is the closest thing too it.
