Taking puppy on holiday? Yaaay or naaay?
« on: September 21, 2018, 10:09:23 AM »
Hi everyone,
So I?ve got the opportunity to go and stay in a cottage by the sea next week for 4 nights with the dogs and I?m wondering what to do for the best for puppy.
Pro?s - she will see the sea, lots of positive socialisation, bonding with the other dogs, only an 1.5 hours in the car and she does car travel daily so that should be ok. Should be a nice family getaway.
Cons - she is safe to be put down at that stage according to vets as will be 12 days after 2nd Jab but won?t have had 3rd jab (lepto) for full protection, and will it disrupt her toilet training being in a new place / be overwhelming for her?
Opinions very welcome.
I?m happy to stay home with her while rest of family goes.

I would take her if I was confident that the floors were easy clean  :005: and that it would be easy to puppy proof, otherwise I would be a nervous wreck by the end. We took Poppy away for a couple of days at that age and she coped really well, so your not mad  :D.

I would take her with you, you could always take a long lead so she can have a run round without the fear she will bog off, and also if you have a collapseable crate, that may be a good idea for sleeping and resting in between all the fun, puppies need a lot o f rest even on their holidays - altho having said that my lot (not puppies) had me up at 6am to go find the bunnies a couple of weeks back, whilst on holiday in Devon  >:D :005:

Take her on holiday  :luv:
Con - it will take you ages to get anywhere because everyone will want to stop her for a cuddle  :005:

Great.  :D
I will go with my heart as you all suggest.
Lots of rest mixed with getting used to going in the beach and out for coffee (me drinking it, not her!) :005:!
Luckily floors are wipeable, and will take her pen as that folds down nicely and keeps her contained from chewing the furniture  >:D.
Weather looks like it?s picking up too!

Yes I too would take her x please do some research before you give her the Lepto vaccination though.  The side effects of the vaccine can be horrendous and it doesnt stop them catching the virus, but it can wreak havoc with their immune system.  It is only a virus, like flu and the vaccine only protects them for a few months at most.

Take her!! Best thing we ever did was take our pup on holiday with us! It was a delightful experience and I found it taught our dog  a lot!

The other thing we found really useful (and still do) is to take a small blanket and get your pup used to sitting on it in the pub / cafe etc.  It makes it much easier for them to settle down.

I would take her. Keep everything calm for her and it will be great experience and help her socialization.
Please think carefully about having the Lepto vaccine. As mentioned above it can have serious side effects and isn't  very effective as there are so many different strains.

We've taken pups on holiday in Cottages. Hopefully it will be carpet free, but you could take a bit of plastic sheeting to put down on any likely spots. And diluted white vinegar is great for neutralising accidents smells and stopping the pup from going in the same place.  And maybe some Febreze in case of tell tale smells. Have a great time!

We took our (then) 20 week old to the Lake District in February. He was absolutely fine and loved the walks! It helped to teach him to be good in Pubs/Cafes etc. He's been  away with us twice since then and we arrange all our holidays to include him :shades: He's still only 12 months old but we can take him anywhere without any issues......unless there happens to be another Cocker in the vicinity :005:
