Why do I do research on the internet about Rage Syndrome
« on: February 05, 2008, 09:18:17 PM »
I have worried myself slightly and thought you guys might be able to put my mind at rest.

I made the mistake of reading about Rage Syndrome and have now totally terrified myself, particularily as I have bought a solid black puppy.  I have met her mum, auntie and grandmother and they are absolutely fantastic dogs, amazing temprements, loved family pets so my heart says its all fine and Rage is seen more in puppy farmed dogs.

Re-assure me i've done the right thing.... please

Stop worrying  ;)  True rage is very rare in cockers but there seems to be a tendency for people who do not know the breed (including some vets  >:( ) to talk about rage when they are just talking about normal puppy behaviour  >:(  There are cases of rage and, you are right it is often down to bad breeding, but they are very unusual.

Is there any particular reason why you have been researching this?    If not, just relax (as much as you can with a puppy in the house) and enjoy your new addition.  Someone will be along soon who knows more about this than me and I am sure they will put your mind at rest.  ;)

Oh and we need more details of your pup and some pictures - they are compulsory on this forum  ;)  :005:

Sorry, i've never heard of this before, being a new pup owner. What is the relevance of it being a solid black pup too?

seriously dont worry i have two solid black cockers and they are the sweetest natured creatures in the world (unless they are fighting over a ball of course!)

Just dont forget to socialise them properly to as many people, dogs and situations as poss as early as poss!!! and you should end up with a lovely puppy.

rage syndrome is a condition which supposidly affects cockers usually the solid coloured ones which makes them sometimes psychotic if you like but contry to popular belief its extremely rare and only truly affects a handful of dogs. so if you socialise properly and get the pup from a good breeder you should have no problems

You know your all right and i'll stop worrying, I love my breeders dogs which is what made me decide on Lottie.

I don't have Lottie home yet, will post some pics when I do, she is only 5 weeks old at the moment!

I was just reading up on the breed and somehow got diverted to a site about rage syndrome. You know what the internet is like.

Going to stop worrying and carry on being excited about getting Lottie home

I think the internet is a great thing but also can be a huge worry factor  :-\ When I had my shrekkie who had major health problems, I used to surf the net for hours and worried myself sick about the "What if's"  :'(

There are experiened people on here who will give you loads of advice, help and support, so stop googling and start posting  :005: :005: Oh I have a black cocker, but a worker and not solid but classed as black  ;) Good luck with your baby  :luv:

Dont worry, the chances of your pup having RAGE is about the same as you winning the lottery! I have a solid black who is evil little monkey at times but thats just her!

Mum to cockers Lily, Lance and Krumble and lurchers Arwen and Lyra. Hooman sister to Pepper, 13.

Please don't worry and stop reading about it is probably the best advise i can give. You are probably doing yourself no good as it is worrying you so.

I too have solid back monkey Pup who is now 7 months.  She is a normal happy, healthy, playful pup, who wants to chew everything still hide anything she can find of yours and generally get upto mischief. I met mum  & older sister too and they are sound and can't fault either of them.

Just enjoy your puppy, they don't stay little for long.  :luv:

If you do ever find anything that concerns you deeply then i would say seek advise from your vet.  ;)[/s]

i'm sure i'll be back with loads of questions once we get her home, i'm loving this website.

Oh, one other thing, she is currently fed pedigree complete puppy food, I know I shouldn't change her directly but how quickly can I give her something different.  I don't like pedigree and want to give something without artificial colouring?

I had worries about Rage as well when I started looking at owning a cocker as I wanted a solid colour and a lot of what you read can make you worry about getting a cocker with Rage syndrome. I have no such worry with Chloe and I would love to own another solid colour in the future when the time is right and I know that I have enough knowledge to find a good solid cocker who has been well bred and I won't think twice about it!  ;)

Enjoy your new baby when she arrives!  :luv:

Hello, there is a dog down the road to me and he is a solid black cocker - he's brilliant, gorgeous and obedient - I think you've got a lot to look forward to, if he's anything to go by!  My Merry is a blue roan (who is also brilliant) and they play really well together - good luck!!

Yup rage is very rare nowadays. Also rage has tended to be 'diagnosed' in the past (and still can be sadly)when actually the dog has behavioural problems such as fear aggression. Other breeds have it too. It just seems cockers get the bad press.

I would change it straight away. Often a pup will be a bit 'runny' with all the changes involved with leaving Mum and a new home anyway. So start as you mean to go on  ;)

Thanks Happydog... do you suggest not ever feeding her pedigree here or getting a bag of both and mixing the two together for a little while...

In fact, perhaps this should be a seperate post !
