Duggie has had a name change!
« on: February 14, 2010, 05:00:41 PM »
Originally when we got Duggie, I wanted to call him a human-type name, such as Dougie, Jimmy, Bobby, etc, but every name I came up with, OH would no-no, as he knew someone with that name. :-\ As a joke, he mentioned the name Duggie, and I grasped it, and insisted we call him it, and loads of folk seemed to like it, so reluctantly OH agreed. :D

However, as Scottish folk will know, the slang word for a dog here, is dug, so it sounds like we just added an ie to it and, in effect, are actually calling him Doggie. We have since had people laugh at his name, call us original in a sarcastic manner, tell us that they know someone who didn't give their dog a name either ( ph34r) and others who just plainly just look at us as if we are mad. :P

It got so, that OH would never call his name in public, and if he was trying to recall him, would shout "Here boy", and recently I have been becoming the same - I've been calling on Tia to get the two of them to come, as I've started feeling silly shouting "Duggie". :embarassed:

So, I suggested to OH (again) that we change his name, and start calling him Dougie (rhyming with boogie woogie!) which is short for Douglas, and he agreed, so he is now being called that, and hasn't noticed the difference. :005:

We're going to keep the original spelling of Duggie though on official things, as it saves having to change his papers, etc, although I may change the spelling once we are used to it. :D

So, give a big COL welcome to puppy Dougie! :005:

Dougie as in Doogie Howser then?

I always thought he was called Dougie (short for Douglas, pronounced as Dug-ee) but spelt differently.

Liking the new name  :D

Hello Dougie, welcome to COL :005: from your Southern mate Monty!! :lol2:

I would think Dougie will cope absolutely fine with the name change Fiona as it does sound similar - Monty gets called all the names under the sun before I get to his name some days and he doesn't seem to bat an eye!!

The new (and in no way improved) Dougie is still a holy terror ankle gnasher extrordinaire! :005:

I always thought he was called Dougie (short for Douglas, pronounced as Dug-ee) but spelt differently.

Me too  :lol2:
You're confusing me! He was called Duggie, pronounced Dug-ee, but is now Dougie, pronounced Doog-ee. Up here the name short for Douglas is the latter, but I believe that in England, it is spelled Dougie, and pronounced Dug-ee, am I right? :005:

Or am I confusing you?! :lol2:

Ok I was confused but think I got it now  :005: I thought you were saying you have been calling him Doggy, but I thought he was Dougie which is what you were calling him, but now your calling him Doogie but spelt Dougie. I think its the difference in the spelling as you say, and I thought people found my names confusing  :005:

Ah, I see what you mean! :005: No, because dogs are called dugs here by many people, it was as if we were calling him the slang version of Doggy. People would say "What's yer dug's name?", I would reply "My dug's called Duggie" and it was supposed to evoke a laugh, but didn't. ::) His name was a joke that didn't really work.  :lol2:
