Originally when we got Duggie, I wanted to call him a human-type name, such as Dougie, Jimmy, Bobby, etc, but every name I came up with, OH would no-no, as he knew someone with that name.
As a joke, he mentioned the name Duggie, and I grasped it, and insisted we call him it, and loads of folk seemed to like it, so reluctantly OH agreed.
However, as Scottish folk will know, the slang word for a dog here, is dug, so it sounds like we just added an ie to it and, in effect, are actually calling him Doggie. We have since had people laugh at his name, call us original in a sarcastic manner, tell us that they know someone who didn't give their dog a name either (
) and others who just plainly just look at us as if we are mad.
It got so, that OH would never call his name in public, and if he was trying to recall him, would shout "Here boy", and recently I have been becoming the same - I've been calling on Tia to get the two of them to come, as I've started feeling silly shouting "Duggie".
So, I suggested to OH (again) that we change his name, and start calling him Dougie (rhyming with boogie woogie!) which is short for Douglas, and he agreed, so he is now being called that, and hasn't noticed the difference.
We're going to keep the original spelling of Duggie though on official things, as it saves having to change his papers, etc, although I may change the spelling once we are used to it.
So, give a big COL welcome to puppy Dougie!
