1929 front cover
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:07:01 AM »
I sometimes come across some unusual things when I am collecting breed information and a while ago I brought some magasines from america called 'The Youths Companion' the front cover was of a cocker spaniel although I am not 100% sure that this is the correct breed so I thought I would ask you what you all thought...

Oh yes, that's a cocker, and very typical of what they looked like back then. The English and American Cockers were the same breed until around 1945, so you get a kind of blending of the looks with the old spaniels.

(Pardon me, breed history nerd here  ph34r :005:)

some of the other spaniel breeds from that period do look similar but isn't he a handsom chappie there are sadly no details on who the dog is which is a pity.

More breed history you didn't care about   :005: Up until the 1800s, all the spaniel breeds; springers, cockers, fields, sussex, (not sure about clumbers) were one and the same. The larger ones were called springers, for springing game, the smaller ones were called cockers, for going into dense brush where the larger dogs couldn't go, after woodcock.

Eventually people started breeding more specifically for certain traits so they evolved as separate breeds. That is why they still can look so similar, and the old photos can make it hard to distinguish what breed you are looking at sometimes.

based on weight and height then eventually specific breeder ;)  Makes tracing spaniel history so difficult but it is interesting to see the way that we have changed the breed through selective breeding...

On the point of the spaniel family being one and the same. In the 1800's all 'sporting spaniels were then generally referred to as field spaniels.Dogs over 25lb in weight were classed as Field Spaniels under 25lb were Cocker Spaniel and it was fairly standard for littermates to be in different categories!!

If your interested in framing a doggie picture a friend of mine has a business where they screen print a photo of your choice onto a large canvas that is framed like a piece of art the quality is beautiful, I'll ask if I can post her details on here because they do them at a good price too.
