Over reaction to the front door.
« on: April 06, 2007, 01:13:33 PM »
Dyllan has always had a bit of a thing about the front door closing. He runs to it if the door bell rings and barks a little, but when the door closes he get even more excited. ::)

Yesterday I tried to get him to sit in his bed when the door bell rang (with the aid  of livercake and cheese) this seemed to brake his stride to the door and I continue to do this as it was quite successful.

When he heads to the door I try to be very calm and quiet I call him over and make he interested in me or the food.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Use the doorbell ringing as a cue to *do* something else - for example - run to the back door and sit on a mat ? soooo you need to get someone else to ring the bell while you encourage him to the back door, and sit on the mat... then "pay" him on the mat, with a tasty treat.

This is what we do - Harry runs to the back door and waits for his gravy bone  :P.  I have to admit I do have a safety gate across this area which I then close - to make sure he doesn't run back and out the front door whilst it's open, but I hope (one day  ::)) to have him so well trained that we can do without it
Harry the Sprocker - crossbreed I know, but still gorgeous !
