Bones

Hi Folks ,

After my e-mail about how many times to feed Coco a day etc , I was wondering how old and if ok what type of bones we can give him . My other half eats lamb like no-one else I know so I'm sure there will be at lamb leg bones in the house at least once a week .

I would also like to know do I still have to give him some puppy type of stuff ie : Rice pudding , scrambled egg , readybrek etc . Also will he still require puppy dog food or is there a brand of dog food that is commonly liked ie IAMS ???

Sorry for all the questions but I just want to get it right ,

As soon as I get him ( with his overgrown coat ) I will post a photo of him on the website as he is beautiful and has a real cheeky little face ,

Thanks regards

Hi CJ!!

Ok on the bone front, I would personally stay away from giving your dog lamb bones, the reason being as they splinter into quite sharpe pieces which could be quite dangerous ::)  I don't know how old your doggie is Indie is 20 weeks and I don't get her bones yet, I get her pigs snout from the pet shop and dentarasks to help control tartar build up ;D  On the food front, I hear that a lot of pet shops are no longer stocking IAMS and EUKANUBA for the reasons I will mail you privately if you wish, I don't know if its ok to post on here ???

We were feeing Indie firstly on NUTRO but she wasnt very keen on it a tad bland for Indie, then we swapped to JWB (James Wellbeloved) which she did enjoy for a time but again she got fed up with it :-  She is now on a all natural food called AUTARKY which was recommended by Lynseyloo and she loves it, its also VAT free  ;D

Good luck!!

Hi Coco is 7.5 months old . As I said we are getting him second hand ( or paw ) , and I would really like to make sure I do it all correctly . From what we saw when we visted where he currently lives - he has been well taken care of and he is a very happy and playful pup. However his diet is very dry and dull and I would like to change this and this is why all the questions.

We are intending to feed him somethng dry during the day and in the evening when we are eating give him some better variety - and hopefully also stop him getting up at the table when we are eating .

regards

Talking of bones - I recently bought 2 hollow bones for Millie - one filled with a cheese paste and one filled with a chicken paste. She has long ago cleared out the cheese and chicken (although sometimes I stuff a dairylea triangle down one as a treat!)and is now chewing them - some of the noises are horriffic!  :o sounds like her teeth are breaking off!
I've no idea what kind of bones they are - although I presume leg bones from a cow or maybe horse  :( as they are quite big.
Should I take them off her now they are empty? She's 10months now.

We feed uncooked brisket bones to our dogs, upon the breeders recommendation, and have had no problems as they are soft enough for them to chew up.

Posted on behalf of Lynsey, who seems to be having problems posting this morning :)

I would recommendyou keeping coco on the same food he is currently on for a short while as with the move to a new home it can cause runny tums anyway, and you do not want to add to this IMO...I would change his diet a little way down the line, I was in a similar position I was first able to give a home and hug my baby when she was nearly 6 months, and she was on a diet that clearly didn't agree with her, her skin itched, her coat was dull etc..  Like Emma told you I put Jessie on Autarky and haven't looked back, even my yorkie likes it, but I am not for one minute saying it is right for every dog, they are like us...all individual  ;D
but...that said I know have a non itchy dog with a glossy coat...it works for her...and poppy the yorkie was always a scruff so thats hard to tell any change.. lolololol  ;D

Hi Lynsey, we bought our first bag of autarky yesterday,
as you know my nell is on JWB,.. anyway i put Autarky in one hand and JWB in the other!!! i did this about four times and each time, she made a beeline for the Autarky, :D so thanks for the tip, ;)...The price is also less than half the price of JWB as well.   ;D

Mike is rite don`t be tempted to change food just yet. Your puppy will have enough to deal with what with moving home without changing his diet as well :)
Most complete foods do look dull and boring that`s just the way they are, although they look dull to us they are nutritionally balanced and contain everything your puppy needs :)
Never give a dog cooked bones of any sort, they are dangerous. They can splinter and cause problems internally.
You could give your puppy a raw chicken wing to chew on, most dogs love them. Don`t leave a young puppy unattended with one in case they get a bit greedy and try to swallow it whole :o

Hi CJ,
:D Bet you are excited and can't wait to get Coco!  My cockers love those Nylabones which are available in various flavours and last ages but are safe.  ;)
I too would not recommend you mess around with his diet too much, providing he is doing OK on what he is currently being fed.  When you start changing about they can start to become finicky! ???
