Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM
« on: June 04, 2008, 10:37:48 AM »
anyone got one?
this lens looks like it might be ok for day to day stuff and prevent changing from the standard one that came with the camera to my 70 - 300.
my camera is a canon 400D
the cheapest so far I can find it is here.

I don't have one but it looks like a good bog standard lens - I know it's quite an old lens and Canon have not updated it - have you looked at Sigma (they bought out a new 18-125mm in May).

I've got the  EF 28mm - 90mm f/4-5.6 III

This site may help you  :D  http://www.usa.canon.com/content/rebelxt_tutorial/rebelxtlessons.htm  (the little boxes bottom middle of page are different pages to click thro and on the last page there is a link to a lens website)

Hopefully this is the link for the info on the 28 - 135mm lens http://www.usa.canon.com/content/rebelxt_tutorial/rebelxtlessons.htm I quite fancy getting this one too

Hope it helps (I'm still learning  :shades: )

I have this one (the 28-135) and it's fine for general use, it's not much good for taking photos of the dogs unless they're sitting right in front of you but it's good for landscapes etc. and I'm getting good use out of it on this trip. It really depends what you want to use it for. If you can stretch to it the Canon IS lenses are very good.

You're going to lose a good bit of image quality with that Sigma lens when you use it at the telephoto (200mm) end. That's pretty common with this type of lens which tries to cover such a wide zoom range as 18-200mm really goes from very wide angle to beginning telephoto. You can only get f/6.3 at the full length so you'll have to stop down quite a bit to get decent photos in anything less than perfect lighting.
