There are a variety of kidney problems. Bobby had Protein losing nephropathy, meaning that the filtration system into the kidney was blocked. Only dialysis could have kept him going. Tumours are easier to live with by diet and drugs. My regular vet had retired, and I saw 3 different vets when I was concerned about him first coughing up bile , then his weight loss, and dull hair. Finally his bad breath. None of them seemed to read the previous notes to come to an early diagnosis. This was over two or three months. When the young vet said bad teeth I was surprised, but opted for the pre surgery blood test, at last. No tooth or gum disease. Then his poo became black.
He had a drug and renal diet. I was warned that he could live for either weeks or years. Sadly it was three months, and we made every day special , and took him to the seaside, which he loved.
I’m sorry if this upsets you. This particular condition got him at 8 years old, but your girl is a wonderful age, and I hope it is just a minor, slow, age related condition and that diet and drugs will work well for her.
Make sure you always see your own vet, so that it is properly followed, regular urine samples, and research diet. I joined a Facebook Kidney dog group, but although it was friendly, it was mostly American, treatments were in different measures, and recipes in cup measures, so it wasn’t any help. This was four years ago, so things may be better now. I would think there are UK support groups now.
Needless to say, I left that vet practice. I now go to a small independent one, with one vet and devoted clientele.
