A decision has been made today
« on: February 24, 2004, 01:33:09 AM »
A decision has been made today that Tia will loose her eye, and they're doing the op in the morning. I'm feeling relieved and sad all at once. She has dry eye in both eyes, but in the right one the problem was chronic when we got her.
When we adopted her 3 months ago, the suggestion was there (about removing the eye), but we were to see if 3 months consistant treatment could do the trick. I'm happy and proud to say that the least affected eye is now great , and very precious. Treatment will continue in that eye to keep it good.
However the right eye is blind, always gunky and as dry as blotting paper. I also feel angry - if the problem had been seen to by her previous owner, all this would have been avoided.
She has been so good about all this, I do hope that the op will bring her the relief that she deserves.

Awww, poor Tia. hope all goes well with the op Mary - you would be amazed at how quickly they adjust to things like that. But if she's blind in that eye anyway, it won't put her up nor down. Like you say though, its a shame its had to come to this when it so easily could have been prevented. :(

Let us know how she gets on.

Good luck with the op Mary, Tia will adjust very quickly. Its as you say! its such a shame it had to come to this.

My sons dog a Cairn, has dry eye as well, she is only 18 months old, they sought treatment right away.  And she is fine.

Give Tia a big ((( hug ))) from me.

So sorry to hear this, Mary - I can only begin to imagine how you must feel.

If it's any help, my friend has a cocker who lost an eye through cancer, and he has continued to live a very full, active and happy life.

Dear Mary

Sorry to hear about poor Tia but as the others have said she will be fine and cope surprisingly well with just one eye.  You will also be surprised at how quickly she recovers and gets on with things.

Best wishes and hugs to the brave girl.

awwww Mary, You should be very proud of the fact that all your efforts have saved Tias eye and Tia will without a doubt be a much happier dog without all that discomfort after her operation.

(((hugs for you both)))

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts everyone. I dropped her off this morning, and she went off happily with the nurse (unlike Tia - I expect the brakes will have gone on as soon as she got through the door!). She may have thought that the nurse would give her food as I'd been so forgettful not to have......
She's in good hands at the Harmsworth RSPCA Hospital, but my only (irrational) worry is that they get the right/correct eye. I shared this with the nurse, and she said she'd make sure!!
I pick her up this evening, and can't wait!
Cheers,

Mary, I do hope everything goes well with Tia's op.

Be reassured the whe will be fine - I sometimes meet up with a chap who's got two cockers, one of whom is totally blind, a believe me he still leads a full and active life and runs along the river with the other one and you wouldn't even notice he was blind.  As long as he is walked somewhere familiar, he just lets his nose take over!

Will be thinking of you today.
