Poor Dave, but he certainly is a trooper and will take it all in his stride.  Fingers crossed for some positive news next week.   :-*

Wait till you see the specialist Hannah - a few weeks ago I was told by my vet that one of mine had serious loss of vision in both eyes, we went to see a specialist a few weeks later and was given the all clear  :-\ maybe it was just an infection that cleared up, I don't know!

I asked about PRA (both parents clear or clear by parentage) and were told that highly unlikely to spot it in a young dog but in our case, should not occur if the parents were clear.

Hope that Dave's prognosis better than you anticipate :bigarmhug:

Good luck at the specialists, Hannah. I'm sure you have mentioned who is Dave's sire on here and if it is who I'm thinking of, then he's Optigen tested clear for prcd_PRA so even if Dave's mother was a carrier or even affected, the worst he could be would be a carrier. However, there is more than one form of PRA - the Optigen test only covers prcd_PRA and there could be other forms of PRA we don't know about yet. There's also what used to be called cPRA but is now referred to as RPED or Retinal Pigment Epithelial Dystrophy (this generally doesn't result in a total loss of sight and can be helped with supplements apparently).

Hope you get an answer soon anyway and that it is not as serious as you might be thinking.
Jane

Aw, poor little Dave.  Hope he can get sorted.  As someone else said though, if he can't be sorted it will be worse for you than for him.  Good luck for the specialist visit.

Oh Hannah, I missed this.

I really hope the appointment with the specialist clears everything up for you. Really hoping Dave doesn't lose his sight, but feel sure that he will cope well even if he does.

Am really sorry to hear about the problems with Dave's eyesight especially with him being so young. I took our last cocker to the vet when he was young and his eye had become inflamed and swollen overnight. I was devastated when the vet had finishied examining him and said he thought he had glaucoma. I was in tears that night thinking of all the things he wouldn't see, be able do (as I thought) etc. The next day a second vet agreed with the first vet's diagnosis but arranged an emergency appointment with an eye specialist for Jake. It was a hugh relief when he said it definitely wasn't glaucoma, but an eye injury he'd sustained after getting stuck under my daughter's bed, which he was successfully treated for. I know yours is a completely different scenario, but I can so empathise with your concerns about Dave's vision and can only reiterate what Holly Berry has said, about Dave adjusting  and accepting to how it is for him, and it's us as humans who see it so differently for them. I do hope the eye specialist has some positive news for you.

So sorry to hear this. No experience with this I'm afraid.
I do know a brilliant specialist, the one who looks after Meg. He's one of the top in the country. If you need his details please PM me. Hugs to you and Dave.

I'm sorry to hear this Hannah, I know you must be upset :bigarmhug: Even if it's bad news it's amazing what they can cope with and adjust to and with Normy around he'll be fine  ;)

I am seeing the vet on Monday re referring Barnaby to an opthalmologist. As an MT dog I have no knowledge ofhis background but he obviously has cloudy eyes and does rely on Flo quite a lot.  I suspect it is PRA.
I know it is different for you as it is unexpected, and therefore a shock. and I knew when I adopted Barnaby that he had a problem.

Best of luck, try not to worry, as you know they are very resilient little dogs :-\
