Title: Looking at Andis two speed clippers but what blades do i need.
Post by: butterflywings21 on April 16, 2014, 08:02:26 PM
Hi, I'm looking at getting some Andis Two speed clippers but wondered what blades I would need to get too. I would be using them on Tilly's head (because she was clipped twice it grows back thick and very curly) and her chest (to her chest bone area). Any advice would be very welcomed.

I use a no.10 inside the ears and under chin to breastbone. I trim their heads and top third of  ears using thinning scissors, but many people use a no. 10 for the head and ears. I strip the rest, but as a groomer I used to clip cocker bodies using a no. 7.

Thanks for that. She been to 3 groomers so far and everyone has messed her air up and I have had to fix it. I'm getting to the point where I have watched video's online and am going to give it ago. I have done her tail today (good results) and have sorted out her bottom too (no devil horns sticking out anymore). Not sure about how to do her legs yet.

Good on you - grooming your own dog is very rewarding. Just remembered - andis clippers come with a no.10 blade (or they used to), so you may not have to buy a separate one.

Having an end result in mind helps. And my breeder gave me fab advice :"don't panic, it's only hair and it'll grow back!"

I use a no 10 as above on the head, top third of ears, face and throat on pet dogs, but these are the ones I also clip the bodies on a number 7 also. If you are stripping the body still, but are unable to do so on the head I would use thinning scissors there to take it down more gradually and naturally, so it blends with the rest of the groom better. You can then take as much or as little as you want to.  :D

How do you use the thinning scissors on the head, I have used them on the top part of her ear and bottom, but I am a little un sure of how to hold them correctly (also scared of cutting her skin).

Go in the direction of the coat. I know this can be difficult if curly. If so maybe just go from stop to occiput. Basically meaning from front to back of the scull. Just pull the coat away from the head a bit with a comb or fingers, so you know where the scull is & snip a tiny bit at a time and brush each time before you snip again. Take it very slowly at first and the more confident you get the easier it will become. Once you cut the coat it may prevent it from being strippable though, but from the sounds of what you have said it is there anyway. I just think this will take it down more naturally than clipping if you are still stripping all the rest. I hope that helps.  :D

Yes, thank you. She still gets stripped on her back, but her head is a no go area for stripping now. :'(....will have ago with the thinning scissors once it grows a bit more.

Aww such a shame, but the thinners will take it down more naturally. Just lift the hair away from the scull and take it slowly. You will speed up as you get the hang and your confidence grows. Will make it easier to blend into the ears too. Good luck.  :D

If the groomers have messed up, you'll be better doing her yourself anyway :)

The first few attempts may not look great, but you'll get there, I promise :)

How do I trim the front of her legs so it leaves feathers at the back. Is there any website or videos that show how to groom well?? I have looked on line but they all vary. I only really want to clip her ears underneath and under her chin down to breastbone if I can.

Just leave them be, it'll grow that way naturally :)

You'll probably have to trim the fronts though & sides blending into the feather. Again I would use thinners there. You'll be a dab hand with them before long.  ;)

tried her feet this evening, tricky is an understatement :005:. not knowing how much to take off, so worried i'll cut her skin. slow and steady, i'll do a bit each day. still need to get clippers for her ears and chest, now not sure which of the Andis to go for as it sounds like I'll use more thinning scissors to do the areas.

Aww it is entirely up to you how you groom her. One of the advantages of doing it yourself. My personal opinion is that thinners will take the head down more naturally if you are still stripping the body. The same with the legs really. You can strip the legs if you think she will let you. By all means clip the tops of ears & throat on a pet groom. These areas are more difficult to scissor. I use a 10 blade on pet grooms on both these areas. It very much depends on the look you want to how you want to groom her. It does sound like you want to keep as natural as possible, which is why I suggest the thinners where stripping is not possible in places. Practice deffo makes perfect here. Take it slowly an little and often as you say. You'll soon get the hang of it & have her just how you want.  :D

I love the look of yours but in an ideal world I do not want Tilly's skirt to be as long (she loves to find every muddy puddle going), and with two children and 2 1 hour jobs to do a day I find I run out of time to wash (not after every walk), blow dry after every walk.

Just cos I'm nosey, do you trim the fronts (not fruits as auto correct keeps telling me lol)? I don't on Charlie he didn't need it, but I do blend the sides :)

Ah I understand that completely butterflywings21. I have pets as well as show dogs and they all love a muddy puddle or two. Just my show dogs take more sorting out afterwoulds  ;)  :005: I have mine in a mixture of grooms and it is your choice as to how you choice to groom dependant on lifestyle etc, which is what I do with mine clipped pets or stripped for show. ;) The only reason I suggested thinners for you here is you seemed to be trying to keep the natural look with stripping the body etc. Plenty of pets are clipped for ease of care. Depends what look you are going for.  :D

Dipsydoodlenoodle I trim the throat and do a mixture of stripping and thinning the shoulders into the legs as I want his front angulation shown off. ;)

If you want it really, really short, then yes you can use a #10 blade on the body but for a more natural look, you might want to consider a #7F for the body and a #10 for up the throat, head, inside ears etc

I have the Andis 2 speeds and use a #7f on J's body.  His fur grows massively quickly but it's a quick job to keep it neat and tidy (I leave his ears, chest rug, leg and tummy feathers)  ;)

Where will I find the best price for some of these ?

The companies on the grooming sticky are all of good repute and are well known within the dog world.

I'd rather a grooming company had knowledge, longevity and a good reputation rather than a slick website  ;)

It's up to you if you want to shop around, none of the companies listed are untrustworthy.

I completely agree - I have bought from all the suppliers listed and they are all reliable and experienced traders but obviously are not huge corporations with a massive budget to spend on a website (although Simpsons, Diamond Edge and Groomers all have standard, small business-type websites which are not off putting that I can see :-\)

For what it's worth I've made online purchases from both Diamond Edge and Groomers and found them both to be completely trustworthy and excellent to deal with.
My own preference is Groomers and I can honestly say that I haven't been disappointed in any way with their level of service. If you're not happy about dealing through their website then give them a phone. They're very knowledgable regarding the products they sell and can often advise you on the most suitable products for your needs.
My own experience of their aftersales service and support is awesome. I had a fault develop on some Andis clippers I had bought from them just a few months out of warranty and phoned them to arrange a repair. I was sent some loan clippers while mine were being repaired and, when mine were returned a week later a new motor had been fitted free of charge as they considered that it should not have failed in such a short time in domestic use. Several weeks later they contacted me to say that the manufacturers had found a bearing fault in the motor and I was sent a small gift as compensation.
Can't say better than that, reasonable prices, excellent product knowledge, fast delivery and brilliant customer support. I deal with them to this day.

Bob.
