Title: Slippery elm + dose
Post by: bizzylizzy on February 14, 2020, 08:02:09 PM
I know lots of you recommend slippery elm powder for your dogs, so I ordered some today from the chemist. Unfortunately there are no details on the pack, I‘ve googled it but am a bit confused as to how to use it, there seem to various suggestions ranging from making a tea with hot water, to soaking it until it coagulates ... The recommended doses seem to vary a lot aswell. Would be grateful for advice please!
Many thanks all!  :luv:

I've always just sprinkled it on their food and I give about a teaspoon per meal. I'm not really sure  of its benefits, maybe it takes longer to work being a natural product. If it's for an upset tummy then I've started to resort to Pro-kaolin.   >:(

Thanks, that does sound the easiest way, although it apparently needs water to work (a bit like bran maybe?), so I can perhaps just add a bit of extra water over the food...
I bought it in a bit of panic as Humphrey‘d eaten a bit more bone than normal and I was worried he‘d get a bit constipated. (Been watching too many vet programmes!  :lol2:) There are loads of websites praising its benefits but unfortunately a lot of them make a bit of a science out of administering it,!!>:(
Thanks  :luv:

If mine get constipated (only usually happens if they are taking antibiotics or steroids) I give them a teaspoon of s/s milk with warm water added once a day, usually does the trick and they love the 'treat'

I’m guessing Semi skimmed milk?

I sprinkle about a teaspoon of powder  in Archies food. Works brilliantly for his dodgy tummy. He suffers from chronic colitis and whenever he has a flare up I use it.

Jayne because of it's smell I mix with dessert spoon natural yogurt and a few sprinkle of sugar or a wee bit honey and add to Ollie's food - I am a bit confused though( I know doesn't take much) I give it Ollie for the runs - and after a few doses I just give a spoon of live yoghurt daily ( must be live and no sweetner.
Here is the link to page in UK I purchase from hope it works https://www.dorwest.com/product/tree-barks-powder-for-dogs-and-cats.

When Ollie had his operation last year and was bunged up it was pumpkin I used and vet said one teaspoon olive oil.

:lol:oh heck Julie, now I‘m a bit puzzled!  I think its maybe an allrounder for general tummy upsets? Not to worry, the overdose of bone he had seems to have passed through with no problem so I haven‘t actually needed it anyway but no doubt it will come in useful at some time in the future.....At least I‘ll know now how much to give him and how!!
Many thanks again all!!  :luv:

I give mine lactulose if they are constipated (use it myself sometimes too as I take lots of painkillers) - buy from chemist. It basically softens things up rather than making them loose
