I was thinking it was about time I gave a bit of an update on Caoimhe's field trial season so far and today turned out to be a good day to do it because she just won the Essex Field Trial Society Open Cocker Stake meaning she's now an OFTW and she has qualified for the Championships in January :banana: :cool4: :banana: :cool4: :banana: :cool4:
I'm so, so proud of her, she's a dog of a lifetime and ecstatic doesn't quite cover how I feel. Simon (her trainer/handler) had his eardrums shattered when he phoned to tell me she'd won and then poor Helen had a very garbled phone call to tell her to clear her diary on the 16th and 17th of January :005:
She now has one 1st place, one 2nd place, one 4th place and 3 tickets (Certificates of Merit) gained in Open trials this season - she has only once not been in the rankings :shades: She needs one more win to make her a FTCh so fingers are crossed she gets it, there's so much luck involved in trialling though so we'll see how it goes. I'm over the moon regardless though, I just wanted her to qualify for the Champs and it's a dream come true :D
And because someone always asks, I don't handle her in her trials myself because a) I'm not nearly experienced enough and I have a full-time job and can't do all the travelling that's involved and b) I want her to win and she's far, far too good to use as a 'gaining experience' dog. Her trainer/handler is Simon Tyers who won the Championships with Caoimhe's sire in 2007 and her half-uncle in 2008.
I'll get more details on the trial itself when I speak to Simon again later, he told me to call him back once I'd calmed down a bit which may take some time :005:

Does the O in the OFTW, stand for Open Field Trial Winner?
Yes, she's already had a novice win to qualify her to run in opens but needed an open stake win to qualify for the Championships. Two open wins = FTCh.

Slightly off topic but...
I may be in a complete muddle, but did she have a litter a little while back - if so how are they all, have they all left home and are any of them likely to follow in her footsteps into trialling.
Even more off topic (sorry!) but are all Rodaidh's pups away to puppy walkers now (I think I'm right in thinking they were a Hearing Dogs for the Deaf litter?)

The pups are all looking good but it's still early days, they're just coming up for 7 months now. Ro's pups are all doing really well too, they're all out with socialisers; my boss, our national applications and supply manager, and her OH are socialising Chester from the first litter and she says he's the best puppy she's ever had which is great :D They want to keep him and train him for working if we keep him on as a stud dog.

It's an amazing achievement in my view - it's so incredibly competitive and it's a very VERY special dog that makes the grade.
I love my dog to bits but I know there is no way he could have achieved this level - Caoimhe is a tiny fast hard hunting mega star who has the most incredible turn of speed and works her little heart out :luv: :luv:

She is so incredibly intelligent and determined, Simon told me about her runs today and she was just brilliant.

Yes, the Championship is open to spectators, it's near Andover in Hampshire this year. You have to be there early doors as the actual trial ground is usually not where the catering/prizegiving tent etc. is and you have to follow on in convoy to get to the starting point so if you turn up late you probably wouldn't find it and wouldn't catch up with the line.

I'm obviously going although I'll probably be hiding at the back for most of it ph34r Helen is coming to give me (im)moral support and Jo (Crazy Cocker Gang) and Mez are going to try to get down from Cumbria too :D About half of the dogs get through to the 2nd day so it'll be down to her luck on the day whether she runs on both days or just the first. Tbh whatever happens is the icing on the cake, I'm just ecstatic that she's actually qualified!

Thank you! I'm really nervous for her but I've spoken to Simon who thinks I'm mad (as usual) and she's absolutely fine, it'll just be another day at work for her. She's had a good week of preparation and she's going really well so it'll be down to the luck of the day if things go her way or not. She's drawn number 26 which is good for her, she runs better when she's seen other dogs go before her. There won't be any results tomorrow, the dogs will have their first runs, hopefully they'll fit them all in and not have to carry any over until Tuesday morning, then they bring their pick of the field back for the second day so the first test will be to see if she gets brought back to run again on Tuesday. Whether she does or not though it should be a good couple of days and I'm just so proud of her for being there.

Ah, that's a good link Vixen, thanks! She is down with Simon as owner/handler as I had to transfer ownership to him to get her her trial runs during the season. We were going to transfer it back after her win but she had a possibility of a few more entries so we left it as is as I wasn't really bothered whose name she went under, she's definitely mine - the big bills I keep getting tell me so :lol2:

yes, apparently 5 dogs were put out yesterday and 4 weren't asked back but did complete their runs. I don't know enough about FT to know why they wouldn't be asked to do a second run after completing their first.
wish teh fb peeps would eb a bit more genrous with their informaiton and news LOL. There is much less coming in that there was for the ESS champs

This is Nicola - I see I've already been beaten to it but no, unfortunately it didn't go her way this time and she didn't get put out but she didn't get a second run. We were told by the Sec at the end that she was through but it turned out one of the judges thought she had made a small mistake which the others apparently hadn't seen/thought. She did everything that was asked and had two contact flushes and two perfect one-cast retrieves in very heavy bramble cover, Simon's an A panel judge himself and he was stunned that she didn't get called back, we all were, but that's trialling! Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't; Simon's other bitch had two good runs but didn't get in the awards. Caoimhe's still so young and there's plenty of time for her yet, I'm so proud of her :luv:

Do the judges all have to be in agreement then for a call back as opposed to a majority vote?

congrats anyway Nicola....she's done well regardless. I had to ask on another forum why a dog that did ok wouldn't get called back....bit of a bummer to do 2 good flushes and retrieves but not get a second run.

I don't know Jay, we were told what we were told but there's no point making a fuss about anything, once a decision is made it's made. That's the way it goes, you have to take the rough with the smooth. She has placed in front of a lot of the dogs who were there, including several who were in the awards, in other trials but it just wasn't her day this time. It was disappointing but Simon had no issues at all with her run and was really pleased with her afterwards which is the main thing.

Well done anyway for getting as far as she did. It also sounds like you had a great day and that she performed brilliantly, and it was probably a good experience for her :D

Nic is driving back to bucks so I'm posting as me again! I took a lot of pics but honestly tonight I'm too tired to even download them. There are NO action shots either - it was impossible light in the woods and press and invited guests were the only ones allowed near the dogs working so we were too far away.
I have to say I did have a little cuddle this morning with FTCh Heolybwlch Fatty before she won the champs - a teensy tiny Liver girl who bears no resemblance to her kennel name :luv:
Caoimhe was amazing - it literally was just really bad luck this time but Simon (who was really inspiring to watch and is a wonderful trainer and handler) believes she can do it and she's really only just begun :luv: :luv:
